LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior outside hitter
Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) registered a match-high 12 kills to lead the 23rd-ranked Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Lynchburg on Sunday at Holekamp Gym.
The Hornets (9-6, 8-3 ODAC) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set, but the Generals (13-0, 11-0 ODAC) answered with seven straight points, including three kills from Gould, to grab an 8-4 advantage. Lynchburg trimmed the deficit to 10-8, but then a kill by sophomore setter
Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) ignited a 7-0 run to break the set open, 17-8.
With the score 18-11 a few rallies later, the Blue and White closed out the set, 25-12, with a 7-1 spurt. In the second, W&L trailed, 15-11, but a 6-0 run, started with kills from senior middle blocker
Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle), Webb and Gould, gave the Generals a 17-15 edge.
The Hornets cut the lead to 18-17, but the Blue and White tallied seven of the final nine points to take the second, 25-19. W&L began the third on a 9-2 run en route to winning the set, 25-17.
Gould added four digs to her kill total. Berry finished with seven kills on 14 attempts for a .357 hitting percentage. She also had two blocks and two digs.
Sophomore defensive specialist
Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) recorded a match-high 21 digs. Webb had 30 assists, two kills and six digs. Junior outside hitter
Val Sokolow (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) totaled six kills, eight digs and two service aces.
Senior outside hitter
Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) tallied four kills on seven swings and eight digs. Junior middle blocker
Katy Blain (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) chipped in six blocks.
Sophomore outside hitter Abbi Leeper led Lynchburg with seven kills, while junior defensive specialist Christian Flinn had 17 digs.
The Generals finish the regular season with a perfect 13-0 record and have clinched the top seed in the ODAC Tournament. W&L hosts a quarterfinal on Wednesday against the No. 8 seed. The final seedings for the tournament will not be determined until later on Sunday.
