No. 23 W&L Volleyball Handles Shenandoah, 3-0

LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) registered 12 kills on 16 attempts with only one error for a .688 hitting percentage to lead the 23rd-ranked Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Shenandoah on Thursday.

The Hornets (5-5, 4-5 ODAC) tallied the first two points of the contest, but the Generals (12-0, 10-0- ODAC) responded with six straight to assume a four-point advantage, 6-2. The margin hovered around four, and then late in the set, Shenandoah pulled to within 22-19 following an ace. Berry answered with a block and a kill to give W&L a set point opportunity, 24-19, and then an attack error gave W&L the stanza, 25-19.

The Blue and White scored seven of the first nine points in the second to take a 7-2 lead. The Hornets eventually cut the deficit to 11-10, but a service error, a kill by senior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) and a combination block from sophomore setter Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) and junior middle blocker Katy Blain (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) extended the lead back to four (14-10) for W&L.

Leading 18-15 later in the set, the Generals went on a 7-1 run, capped on a block by first-year outside hitter Sydney Heifner (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall), to win the second, 25-16. The Blue and White used a 5-1 spurt midway through the third to grab a 17-11 lead, and then closed out the match with six straight points to claim the third, 25-14.

Along with her 12 kills, Berry also had four blocks, six digs and one ace. Gould contributed nine kills and five digs. Webb recorded 25 assists and 11 digs.

Heifner had six kills on nine swings (.667 hitting percentage) and 12 digs. Senior outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) and sophomore defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) each tallied 11 digs.
