Generals down Guilford, 2-0, for first win of the season

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team earned its first win of the season with a 2-0 decision on the road at Guilford on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Generals improve to 1-0-1 overall and in conference with the win, while the Quakers drop to 0-1-1 overall and against ODAC opponents in the loss.
 
Junior defender Jack Rawlins (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary) got W&L on the board in the 15th minute when he finished off a chance created by sophomore defender Charley Colby (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East). The Generals controlled the offense in the first half, outshooting the Quakers, 10-1, and led 1-0 at halftime.
 
W&L's second goal came from first-year defender Haden Biering (Denton, Texas/Ryan) in the 66th minute, and the goal was assisted by first-year midfielder Grant McCarty (Dallas, Texas/Parish Episcopal). The Generals controlled an even greater majority of the offensive chances in the second half with a 20-4 edge in shots.
 
Rawlins' and Biering's goals came on their only shots of the game, while sophomore midfielder Michael Kutsanzira (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Putnam Science Academy (Conn.)) led the Blue and White with nine total shots. Sophomore midfielder Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) tallied five shots and put one attempt on goal.
 
Junior keeper Michael Nyc (Kildeer, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) (1-0-1) played all 90 minutes to earn his 21st career shutout, extending his program record. Nyc made one save to preserve the clean sheet.
 
For the Quakers, sophomore forward Kenny Nzekwe finished with a team-high three shots, with one on goal. Junior midfielder Giovanni Santibanez and sophomore midfielder Jasper Ardinger each shot once. Senior goalkeeper Zach Van Kampen (0-1-1) made 10 saves in 90 minutes of action.
 
The Generals ended the game with a 30-5 shot advantage and edged Guilford, 14-1, in shots on goal.
 
W&L's next game will be the home opener, as the Generals will host Southern Virginia on Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
