LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore midfielder
Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) and senior forward
Nick St. Pierre (Roanoke, Va./Northside) accounted for multiple goals apiece to lead the Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 4-1 ODAC victory over Bridgewater on Thursday.
The duo teamed up to put the Generals (2-0-1, 2-0-1 ODAC) on the board in the third minute of the game, as St. Pierre found Bass cutting through the middle of the box, as Bass finished inside the right post for the first tally. In the eighth minute, St. Pierre picked up a loose ball from close range, following a free kick, and found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
The Eagles (1-2-2, 0-2-2) cut their deficit to one in the 36th minute when crisp passing from the top of the box ended in curling shot from the left side off the foot of sophomore forward Matthew Shelor and inside the right post.
W&L answered in the 45th minute when sophomore midfielder
John Peterson (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) received a pass from sophomore defender
Lucas Roberton (Frederick, Md./Urbana) and finished with his right foot with just 49 seconds before halftime.
Bass put a cap on the scoring in the 86th minute with a long run into the box. He made a move to the right to create space from a defender and curled a right-footed shot into the top right corner for his second score.
Bass led the Generals with four shots and put two attempts on goal in logging in second career multi-goal game. St. Pierre's goal was the sixth of his career, and it also marked his first career game tallying both one goal and one assist. Junior goalkeeper
Michael Nyc (Kildeer, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) (2-0-1) played all 90 minutes and made three saves.
Shelor's goal was his only shot attempt in the game, while sophomore forward Alex Martinez assisted on the goal. Sophomore midfielder Josh Gilliam led the Eagles with three shots and had two shots on goal. Sophomore keeper Tyler Deutsch (1-2-2) matched Nyc's three saves in the 90 minutes of action.
