LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team extended its home unbeaten streak to 26 games with a 5-2 win over Southern Virginia on Monday afternoon.
In the eighth minute, senior defender
Erik Recke (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) lofted a centering pass to the middle of the box. The SVU (1-5) keeper punched the ball away, but senior midfielder
Harris Salom (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) came in and hit a right-footed shot to the center of the frame for W&L's (3-0-1) first goal.
SVU first-year midfielder Jackson Gorringe took a corner kick in the 11th minute, and the ball found the head of a leaping first-year midfielder Jaren Robledo, as he put the ball in the back of the net to equalize. The Generals quickly regained the lead in the 15th minute, as Recke centered another pass into the box where sophomore defender
Tyler Smith (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & Agnes School) dove and headed the ball past the keeper.
Sophomore forward
Harry Barringer (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick School) extended the W&L lead to 3-1 in the 36th minute when he attempted a shot from close range that was saved. The rebound came right back to him and he finished on his second try.
Senior forward
Harry Pinkerton (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnett) capped the first-half scoring when he fired a shot from 20 yards out on the right side. His attempt lofted just out of the reach of the SVU keeper and into the back of the net for his first score of the season.
The Knights' Landon Shelton cut the W&L lead to 4-2 in the 52nd minute, but Pinkerton added his second goal of the day in the 56th minute to seal the win.
Pinkerton finished the game with four shots and put three on goal to record his first career multi-goal game. Barringer and sophomore midfielder
Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) tied for the game high of five shots each. Sophomore
Rye McMillen (Fairfax, Va./The Heights School) (1-0) earned the win in goal after he made one save in the first half. Junior
Michael Nyc (Kildeer, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) was the keeper in the second half and he also made one save.
Shelton led the Knights' offense with two shots, while six other players all attempted one shot each. Sophomore Spencer Young (1-5) played all 90 minutes in goal and made seven saves.
A 22-8 W&L shot advantage was aided by a 15-4 edge in the first half. The Generals also earned six corner kicks and conceded three, with all nine total corners coming in the first half.
The Generals will return to the pitch and ODAC play on Thursday when they host Eastern Mennonite at 3:00 pm.
