LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore midfielder
John Peterson (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) had a hand in each of the first two goals, totaling three points, to help the Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Eastern Mennonite on Thursday.
The win propels the Generals to 4-0-1 overall, 3-0-1 in the ODAC, and it marks the 27th straight home game without a loss for the Blue and White (25-0-2). The Royals fall to 0-7-1 overall and 0-6-1 in league play.
In just the fourth minute of the game, Peterson received a long cross from the left side and had time to trap the ball and look for a pass. He found senior midfielder
Harris Salom (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) cutting through the box and put his pass on Salom's left foot to finish for the opening score.
In the 20th minute, Peterson found himself around the penalty spot and received a pass from sophomore midfielder
Michael Kutsanzira (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Putnam Science Academy (Conn.)) from inside the box and beat the keeper to the left post for his second goal of the season.
The Generals added an insurance goal in the 88th minute when sophomore midfielder
Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) completed a short pass in the box to first-year forward
Adrian Zimmerman (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) who scored from close range for his first career goal.
Peterson's three-point effort was his third career game with both one goal and one assist, and he was just one point off from tying a career high. Salom led the Generals' offense with seven shots in the contest, three on goal, while Kutsanzira and Bass both shot five times and combined for four on-target attempts.
Junior
Michael Nyc (Kildeer, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) (3-0-1) and sophomore
Rye McMillen (Fairfax, Va./The Heights School) split work in goal for the game. Nyc earned the win after he made one save in the first half. McMillen worked the second half and made two saves.
Four different EMU players tallied one shot each in the game, while junior keeper Ahmed Zaatar (0-7-1) played 87:25 in goal and made 10 saves. First-year Seth Downs played the final 2:35 for the Royals, but did not face a shot on goal.
W&L outpaced the EMU offense by a 33-4 margin in shots, including an 18-1 advantage in the first half. The Royals earned one corner kick in each half, while the Generals earned eight for the game.
The Generals will return to action on Sunday when they close out their home slate with their Senior Day game against Randolph. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
