Balanced Attack Leads Generals Past EMU, 7-0

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team had six players score a goal in a 7-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite on Friday at the W&L Turf Field to open the 2020-21 season.

The Generals (1-0, 1-0 ODAC) dominated the contest, taking 41 shots, while holding the Royals (0-1, 0-1 ODAC) to zero shot attempts. Sophomore forward Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) led the Blue and White with two goals, while sophomore forward Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) had one goal and one assist.

Senior forward Grace Amaden (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) tallied the first goal of the game off an assist from sophomore forward Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) just 8:18 into the first. Sophomore forward Alexis Parks (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) then recorded her first collegiate goal, when she stuffed in a shot from the left post off a pass from Tobeason with 15 seconds left in the first period.

Junior forward Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) extended the W&L lead to 3-0 just before halftime, when she scored off a rebound. In the third period, Muneses stretched the lead to 4-0, as she dribbled into the circle and fired a shot into the back of the cage. Tobeason pushed the margin to 5-0 with 2:35 left in the third, when she scored off a deflection.

Muneses added her second tally just four minutes into the fourth on a nearly identical play to her first goal. Sophomore forward Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) capped the scoring with seven minutes left in the contest, as she scored off a rebound.

W&L held a 17-0 advantage in penalty corners, including a 15-0 edge in the opening half. Junior goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) registered her eighth career shutout, while not facing a shot. Sophomore goalkeeper Ann Ghally made 16 saves in a losing effort for EMU.

The Generals return to action next Friday, when they host Virginia Wesleyan at 7:00 pm.
