LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team scored three goals over the final 8:07 of the game, including two of junior forward
Grace Weise's (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) three in the contest, to defeat Shenandoah, 5-2, on Tuesday at the W&L Turf Field.
The two teams were tied, 2-2, entering the third quarter, and then neither team added to their total in the period. The Generals (5-1, 5-1 ODAC) earned a penalty corner midway through the fourth, and junior forward
Stella Noels (Cambridge, Mass./Middlesex School) sent the ball into Weise on the left side. Weise took a big swing and fired the ball inside the left post to put W&L in front, 3-2, with 8:07 left in the game.
Four minutes later, the Blue and White pushed the ball down the field on a counter attack. First-year midfielder
Emma Gatrell (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) sent a pass to sophomore forward
Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation), who then dribbled around a defender into the center of the circle and flipped a shot past the goalie and into the cage.
The tally stretched the W&L lead to two (4-2) with 4:32 left on the clock, and then Weise put the finishing touches on the game a few minutes later. Sophomore forward
Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) dribbled into the circle on the right side, and sent a pass to the center. Weise quickly one-touched the ball inside the left post for the final goal of the contest.
The three goals marked the first career hat trick for Weise, as she pushed her season goal total to six. Sophomore forward
Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) also recorded her sixth goal of the year in the first quarter on an assist from sophomore forward
Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School).
First-year midfielder Farren Winter scored both of the Hornets' (5-2, 5-2 ODAC) goals in the second quarter. Junior midfielder Kelsey Jones assisted on the first and first-year midfielder Elizabeth Ranberger had the assist on the second.
The Generals led in shots for the game, 24-15, while Shenanodah held a 10-7 edge in penalty corners.
Junior goalkeeper
Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made a season-high eight saves in the contest, playing all 60 minutes. Her counterpart, senior Isabella Morande, also saw 60 minutes of action, stopping 10 shots.
