LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's soccer team moved to 7-0 overall on the season with a 3-1 win over Lynchburg in its final road contest of the season on Saturday.
The win propels the Generals to 6-0 in conference, while their 7-0 overall start is tied for the second-longest winning streak to start a season in program history. It is the first time since the 1997 season that W&L has begun a season 7-0. The Hornets fall to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the ODAC with the loss.
Sophomore forward
Lindsay White (Greenville, S.C./JL Mann) put the Generals on the board first in the 12th minute. Senior
Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) battled with a defender for possession, but was able to flick the ball ahead to White. White timed her chance from the left side and beat the keeper inside the near post for the score.
Hoeh then scored in the 55th minute to double the W&L lead to two goals. She fought off a defender up the right side and, after finding enough space for her shot, fired inside the left post for the score. First-year defender
Cameron Grainger (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) scored the team's final goal in the 60th minute off a free kick from well over 35 yards out.
The Hornets scored their goal in the 79th minute, when sophomore forward Alyssa Damato scored off a pass from junior midfielder Taylor Smith, but it was too late in the game to mount any further danger against the Generals' lead.
Grainger and senior midfielder
Elle Prillaman (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) led the W&L offense with three shots each on the day, as Grainger put two attempts on goal. White's goal came on her only shot of the contest. Junior keeper
Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (6-0) earned the win, allowing one goal and making three saves in 90 minutes of action.
Damato and Smith led the Lynchburg offense with two shots apiece, while junior midfielder Emily Santana and sophomore midfielder Maddy Myers both shot once. Junior goalkeeper Laura Mason (5-2) took the loss, as she allowed three goals and made six saves in 90 minutes of play.
W&L held the shot advantage over Lynchburg, 12-6, and held the Hornets to three shots in both halves. The Generals also earned five corner kicks and conceded just three.
The Generals will be back in action on Saturday when they close out their regular season slate with a 4:00 pm battle with Bridgewater.
