No. 3 W&L Women's Lacrosse Stymies No. 23 Lynchburg, 16-8

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The third-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team used a seven-goal run in the second half to defeat 23rd-ranked Lynchburg, 16-8, on Saturday at Shellenberger Field.
 
The Hornets (3-3, 0-1 ODAC) scored the first goal of the contest six minutes into the half, but then back-to-back goals by junior attacker Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) put the Generals (6-0, 3-0 ODAC) in front, 2-1, with 22:30 left in the stanza. Faria then assisted on a goal by sophomore attacker Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) to extend the margin to 3-1 just a minute and a half later.
 
Lynchburg stopped the three-goal run with a tally by senior attacker Kelsi Trevisan with 18:45 remaining in the half, but scores by senior midfielder Kit McNiff (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and sophomore midfielder Christina Cavallo (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes' School) pushed the Blue and White in front, 5-2, with seven minutes until intermission.
 
Over the final seven minutes of the half, the Generals outscored the Hornets, 4-2, in taking a 9-4 lead into halftime. Senior attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) had two goals and an assist during the run.
 
Similar to the first, the Hornets notched the first goal of the second half, but then W&L scored the next seven stretch the margin to 16-5, with 9:50 left in the contest. Schwab had two goals and an assist during the onslaught, while Shelley totaled one goal and two assists during the spurt.
 
Lynchburg registered three goals over the final six minutes, but the Blue and White held on for the eight-goal victory.
 
Schwab finished the night with four goals and two assists, while Shelley added three goals and three assists. Faria totaled three goals and two assists, and McNiff and Cavallo each had two goals.
 
McNiff and sophomore midfielder Jenny Lisovicz (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) each had three ground balls, and senior defender Catherine Arrix (Darien, Conn./Darien) led the team with two caused turnovers. First-year goalkeeper Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) played all 60 minutes, making six saves.
 
Trevisan led the Hornets with four goals and one assist, and senior attacker Nicki Santora added two goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Broughton saw all 60 minutes of action, stopping eight shots.
 
W&L held a 37-17 advantage in shots and a 24-17 edge in ground balls. Each team secured 13 draw controls.
 
The Generals return to action on Thursday, when they play at Shenandoah at 7:00 pm.
