Muneses Ties W&L Single-Game Assists Record in 4-3 Win at Roanoke

SALEM, Va. — Sophomore forward Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) tied a program record with three assists, as the Washington and Lee field hockey team held off Roanoke, 4-3, on Friday at Kerr Stadium.

The Generals (4-1, 4-1 ODAC) scored the first goal of the game with 1:40 left in the first period. Muneses played the ball ahead on a break to junior forward Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School). Weise then dribbled around the outstretched goalie and shot past a defender for the goal.

Just 30 seconds later, Weise struck again to give W&L a 2-0 lead. She first took a shot on the right side that junior goalkeeper Hannah Roerden blocked. Weise corralled the rebound and stuffed the ball inside the right post for the tally.

The Blue and White pushed the lead to 3-0 with 4:53 left in the second. Muneses made a long pass into the circle on the right side. Sophomore attacker Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) deflected the ball across the circle and it bounced off the left post and into the cage.

W&L carried the 3-0 advantage into halftime, and then pushed the margin to 4-0 four minutes into the third. Once again Muneses controlled the ball and sent a pass to the left post, where senior forward Grace Amaden (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) tipped it into the cage.

The Maroons (3-2, 3-2 ODAC) made a late push in the game, scoring three goals over the final 13:08 of play. The final goal of the contest came off a penalty corner as time expired, but the Blue and White still held on for the one-goal victory.

Muneses becomes the sixth player in program history with three assists in a game, and the first since Christina Benedetti '12 registered three against Limestone in 2009. Muneses leads the team in assists this year with six.

With her two goals, Weise now has three on the season. Amaden added her team-best seventh of the year, while Tobeason notched her fourth.

Senior forward Emilee Wooten led the Maroons with one goal and two assists. Roanoke led in shots in the contest, 17-15, and in penalty corners, 6-2.

Junior goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made five saves in 60 minutes for the Blue and White, while Roerden totaled seven saves, playing the entire contest.

The Generals return to action on Tuesday, when they host Shenandoah at 7:00 pm. W&L will honor Amaden before the contest for Senior Night.
