EMORY, Va. — Sophomore setter
Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) totaled 27 assists, 13 digs and four kills to propel the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-0 victory at Emory & Henry on Wednesday.
The Generals (5-0, 5-0 ODAC) fell behind in the first set, 5-2, but responded by winning 10 of the next 14 points to assume a 12-9 lead. The Wasps (0-3, 0-3 ODAC) answered with four straight points to regain a two-point edge (14-12).
A kill by senior middle blocker
Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) trimmed the deficit to one, and then three straight kills by senior outside hitter by
Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) followed by another kill from Berry gave the Blue and White an 18-14 lead. W&L held at least a four-point margin the rest of the set en route to a 25-19 win.
The Generals quickly claimed the first six points of the second and nine of the first 10. E&H made a late run in the stanza, but W&L took the set, 25-15.
The Blue and White grabbed another early lead in the third, and maintained a four-point spread (20-16) late in the set. The Wasps then tied the score, 20-20, with four straight points. Following a service error, Emory & Henry again knotted the set on a kill by first-year middle blocker Hannah Watson.
Berry then closed out the set (25-21) and the match (3-0) for the Generals, registering three kills over the next four points, with the fourth point coming on a Wasps' attack error.
Gould ended the contest with a match-high 11 kills on a .400 hitting percentage. She also added eight digs. Berry contributed nine kills on a .316 hitting percentage with two blocks.
Senior outside hitter
Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) totaled 13 digs, while sophomore defensive specialist
Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) added 12. Sophomore outside hitter
Maggie McSwain (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) notched seven kills.
Watson led E&H with seven kills, while first-year libero Sarah Moore had a match-high 16 digs.
The Generals return to action on Saturday for a pair of matches at Randolph College. W&L takes on Randolph-Macon in a neutral-site contest at 1:00 pm, and then faces Randolph at 3:00 pm.
