LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior attacker
Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) eclipsed 100 career assists, totaling two goals and five assists on Wednesday, to lead the third-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a 17-2 victory over Randolph-Macon at Watt Field.
Shelley scored the first goal of the contest just 3:23 into the opening half off an assist from sophomore midfielder
Christina Cavallo (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes' School). With 18:40 remaining in the period, Shelley found Schwab in front of the cage for a goal. With the assist, Shelley became the third player in program history to notch at least 100 career helpers.
The Generals (5-0, 2-0 ODAC) stretched the lead to 4-0 with 16:41 left in the stanza, after first-year attacker
Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) and Cavallo scored back-to-back tallies. The Yellow Jackets (1-1, 0-1 ODAC) got on the board with 12:54 on the clock, when junior midfielder Lily Henderson scored.
Shelley assisted on the Blue and White's next two goals. The first to junior attacker
Janie Stillwell (Alexandria, Va. / Episcopal), and the second to senior midfielder
Kit McNiff (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), who extended the margin to 6-1 with 11:33 remaining in the half.
Senior attacker Natalie Webster then scored for the R-MC with 10:06 to go in the stanza to trim the deficit to 6-2, but it was the last goal the Generals allowed to the Yellow Jackets the remainder of the contest.
Over the final eight minutes of the period, W&L recorded four goals to push the margin to 10-2 at the break. In the second half, the Blue and White outscored R-MC, 7-0, as the Generals cruised to the 15-goal victory.
W&L led in shots, 38-8, in ground balls, 20-10, and the Generals had just eight turnovers compared to 26 for the Yellow Jackets.
Shelley tied a career-high with seven points. She also moved to second on the program's all-time assists list. She now has 104 over her four seasons. Leslie Bogart '03 holds the record with 136.
Bishop notched three goals to lead all players. Cavallo and Stillwell each had two goals and one assist. McNiff tallied one goal and two assists and led the team draw controls (3) and ground balls (4). Schwab and first-year attacker
Ginny Taylor (Madison, N.J./Madison) both had two goals.
The Blue and White had four players total two caused turnovers, as the team recorded 14 in the contest. First-year
Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) played all 60 minutes, making two saves, to go with one caused turnover and two ground balls.
Junior goalkeeper Caraline Cypher registered 13 saves for R-MC, playing the entire contest.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they play at 23rd-ranked Lynchburg at 6:00 pm.
