W&L Volleyball Tops Roanoke, 3-1

LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) registered a match-high 14 kills to push the Washington and Lee volleyball team past Roanoke, 3-1, on Sunday at Holekamp Gym.

Each team claimed one of the first two sets to even the match, 1-1, heading into the third. The Generals (4-0, 4-0 ODAC) trailed 12-10 in the third, but then a kill by sophomore setter Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) sparked a 6-1 run to put the Blue and White in front, 16-13.

The Maroons (2-2, 2-2 ODAC) won the next point to trim the lead to 16-14, but the Generals tallied the next seven points to assume a 23-14 lead en route to taking the stanza, 25-16. W&L fell behind, 10-7, in the fourth, but back-to-back kills by junior middle blocker Katy Blain (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) brought the Blue and White to within one, 10-9.

Down 16-15 later in the set, the Generals won the next three points, capped on a kill by Gould, to grab an 18-16 advantage. Roanoke claimed the next two points, but then a solo block by Blain and a kill by Gould pushed W&L in front, 20-18. Leading 23-21 a few rallies later, first-year outside hitter Sydney Heifner (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) tipped a ball over the block to give the Blue and White an opportunity for match point.

The Maroons fought off the first on a kill by junior outside hitter Angel Ross, but then on an overpass by Roanoke, Webb attacked the open spot on the floor for a kill, allowing W&L to take the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-1.

Gould recorded 11 digs to go with her 14 kills, while Blain had eight kills on a .375 hitting percentage and a match-high five blocks.

Sophomore defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) notched a match-best 23 digs to go with five assists. Heifner totaled seven kills and 14 digs, and Webb tallied 38 assists, 12 digs and four aces.

Senior middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) had nine kills, four aces and three blocks. Senior outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) recorded 12 digs, four kills and two blocks.

First-year middle blocker Ryanna Clark led the Maroons with 13 kills, and junior defensive specialist Katie Finlan notched 19 digs. Junior setter Olivia Newman had 30 assists and 10 digs.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Emory & Henry for a 7:00 pm contest.
