FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Sophomore midfielder
Christina Cavallo (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes' School) totaled three goals to lead the third-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to an 8-3 victory at 16th-ranked Mary Washington on Saturday.
The Eagles (0-3) scored the first two goals of the contest to grab a 2-0 lead 8:47 into the first, but the Generals (4-0) responded with five straight tallies to assume control of the game.
Senior attacker
Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) pulled W&L to within one, 2-1, off a feed from junior attacker
Janie Stillwell (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) with 20:08 left in the half, and then Cavallo tied the game on a free-position shot with 9:40 on the clock.
Cavallo struck again with 2:16 left before halftime off an assist from Shelley to put the Blue and White in front, 3-2, at the break. First-year attacker
Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) scored 36 seconds into the second on an assist from sophomore attacker
Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) to extended the advantage to 4-2.
Just four minutes later, Schwab registered a goal off an assist from junior midfielder
McKenna Edmondson (Westfield, N.J./Westfield). UMW scored its final goal of the game with 17:48 left in the stanza to pull to within two (5-3).
Sophomore midfielder
Jenny Lisovicz (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) assisted on the next two goals for the Generals. Cavallo scored the first with 15:22 remaining in the contest, and then Schwab tallied the next just 49 seconds later. The Blue and White reached the final margin of 8-3 when Bishop scored for the second time, off an assist from junior attacker
Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), with 7:52 left on the clock.
Schwab finished with two goals and one assist, while Bishop tallied two goals. Shelley totaled one goal and one assist and Lisovicz ended with two helpers. Senior midfielder
Kit McNiff (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) led W&L with five draw controls, while Lisovicz had a team-best three caused turnovers.
First-year goalkeeper
Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) played the full 60 minutes, making four saves and leading the team with four ground balls.
W&L led in shots, 29-8, and in ground balls, 27-20. The Blue and White maintained an 8-5 edge in draw controls. Mary Washington also turned the ball over 27 times compared to 16 for the Generals.
Junior goalkeeper Reilly Miller played all 60 minutes for the Eagles, registering 15 saves. Three players scored one goal each for UMW.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they host Randolph-Macon at 4:30 pm.
