Generals bested twice by Lynchburg in ODAC doubleheader

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team dropped both ends of its ODAC twinbill on Saturday against Lynchburg, falling 15-7 in game one and 19-6 in game two.

With W&L leading by a 4-1 score through five innings of game one, junior second baseman Garrett Jackson hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to cut the Hornets' deficit to 4-3. Lynchburg proceeded to score four more runs on no hits, four walks and one W&L error to go ahead, 7-4. The Generals scored three in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, as sophomore left fielder Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison) doubled home two runs and sophomore center fielder Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) singled in the third run.

Lynchburg responded with another six runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by two-run knocks from first-year shortstop Ryan Long and sophomore right fielder Dylan Fisher. Long drove in another run in the top of the eighth to help the Hornets cap the scoring.

After Jackson put Lynchburg on the board first in the top of the third on a single, sophomore third baseman Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va./James Madison) got the lead back for W&L in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run single up the middle. Senior shortstop Jason Volpicelli (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI Catholic) then reached on an error, which allowed two more runs to score, as the Generals took a 4-1 lead through four frames.

The Hornets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second in game two with the help of a two-run single from Long. W&L sophomore second baseman Peter Clyne (New York, N.Y./Hackley School) singled home a run in the bottom of the second, but Lynchburg tacked on three more runs in the top of the third. Sophomore left fielder Avery Neaves had the big hit of the inning, a two-run home run to right center.

Lynchburg all but secured its game two win with an 11-run fourth inning. Neaves logged an RBI single in the frame and junior Cameron Lane singled in a pair of runs, while the other eight runs in the inning came on one hit and one W&L error.

The Generals scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the score to 17-6, before the Hornets scored their final pair of runs on two hits in the ninth. Sophomore right fielder Jamie Abt (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and Volpicelli both drove in two runs in the five-run seventh.

Salvino had a team-high four hits on the day, three coming in game one, while Erdmann also had a three-hit performance in the opener and drove in a pair of runs. First-year right-hander Ashwin Suresh (Glen Allen, Va./Douglas S. Freeman) (0-1) was the losing pitcher in game one after he allowed six runs (five earned) across 2.0 innings in relief. First-year southpaw Thomas Haller (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) (0-2) was the pitcher of record in game two, as he allowed 10 runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings.

For the Hornets, Long highlighted the offense with six RBI across the two games on 3-for-7 at the plate. Jackson finished game one 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run, while Neaves went 2-for-3 with four RBI and three runs in game two. Sophomore right-hander Zack Potts (3-0) earned the game one win, tossing 4.0 innings and allowing three runs in relief. Junior righty Brandon Pond (2-3) earned the win in game two, allowing just one run on three hits over the first 5.0 innings. He walked one batter and struck out five.
