Generals upended by No. 16 Shenandoah

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team was swept in its season series against Shenandoah after a 14-2 loss on Tuesday evening.

The Hornets (9-1, 6-0 ODAC) scored the first four runs of the game. Sophomore third baseman Pearce Bucher and sophomore shortstop Frankie Ritter singled home one run apiece across the first two innings, and senior first baseman Keegan Woolford helped add two runs in the top of the third.

W&L (1-7, 1-7 ODAC) junior designated hitter Chapin Bassi (Concord, N.H./St. Paul's School) drove in the team's two runs in the bottom of the third when he knocked a double into the right-center field gap to score sophomore third baseman Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va./James Madison) and senior shortstop Jason Volpicelli (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI Catholic).

Shenandoah added four runs in the fifth, two runs in the eighth on a two-RBI double from sophomore designated hitter AJ Ward and the game's final four runs in the ninth. Ritter had the big hit in the final frame, a two-run single to left.

Bassi logged two hits in the game and finished with two RBI. Erdmann and Volpicelli both went 1-for-4 at the plate with a run. Senior right-hander Peyton McCann (Midlothian, Va./James River) (1-1) was the losing pitcher, as he tossed 4.2 innings and allowed six earned runs on 10 hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Senior righty Matt Whitely (Salem, Va./Hidden Valley) relieved McCann and allowed one earned run over 3.1 innings.

For the Hornets, Ritter led the way on offense, going 5-for-6 with three RBI, two runs and a stolen base. Ward and Bucher both had three hits and combined for three RBI and two runs. First-year right-hander Reilly Owen (2-0) earned the win on the mound as he allowed two runs on five hits across 6.0 innings of work. Shenandoah used one pitcher per inning across the final three frames, who combined to allow no runs on one hit.
