Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) recorded seven kills on a .375 hitting percentage with six blocks and four assists to lead the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-0 victory at Guilford on Thursday at Ragan-Brown Field House.
Trailing 14-13 in the first set, the Generals (3-0, 3-0 ODAC) called timeout and then won 13 of the next 14 points to take the stanza, 25-15. The momentum carried over to the second, as the Blue and White started the set on a 10-1 spurt, cruising to a 25-10 victory.
In the third, the Quakers (0-1, 0-1 ODAC) led 10-8, but then W&L won six straight points to assume a 14-10 advantage. Guilford called timeout and won the next point, but then four consecutive points for Generals stretched the lead to 18-11, en route to a 25-17 win in the set to claim the match.
Blain needed just 15 swings to total her eight kills. Senior outside hitter
Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) had a match-high 10 kills. First-year outside hitter
Sydney Heifner (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) led all players with 15 digs.
Sophomore defensive specialist
Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) added 11 digs, while sophomore setter
Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) had 29 assists and four kills.
Sophomore outside hitter Cam Blankenship led the Quakers with five kills and five digs.
The Generals return to action on Sunday, when they host Roanoke at 7:00 pm.
