LYNCHBURG, Va. — First-year midfielder Aaryn Boatwright scored just 1:04 into overtime to lead Lynchburg past the Washington and Lee field hockey team, 3-2, on Tuesday at Shellenberger Field.
Down 2-0 entering the second half, the Generals (2-1, 2-1 ODAC) evened the game with two goals in the third. With 10 minutes to go in the period and on a counter attacker, sophomore forward
Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) sent a pass to the middle of the circle.
Senior forward
Grace Amaden (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) deflected the ball to the right, and then sophomore forward
Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) redirected it in midair into the cage for the team's first goal.
Just under five minutes later, sophomore forward
Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) brought the ball up the right side and then flipped a shot over the head of the goalie for the equalizer. Neither team scored in the fourth to send the game to an extra period.
The Hornets (3-0, 3-0 ODAC) earned a penalty corner just 49 seconds into overtime. After the insertion, senior forward Jackie Lerro had the ball on the left side. She dribbled to the left post and then struck the ball to the center of the circle. Boatwright got just enough of her stick on the ball to send it rolling over the line for the game-winning tally.
Junior
Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) played 61:04 at goalkeeper and made four saves with three goals allowed. Senior goalkeeper Laurel Nicks also saw 61:04 of action, stopping six shots with two goals allowed.
Each team took 10 shots in the contest, while Lynchburg had seven penalty corners compared to just two for W&L.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they play Sweet Briar at 11:00 am at Amherst County High School.
