LEXINGTON, Va. — The third-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team tied a program record with 27 goals and used a 24-0 run midway through the contest to take down Southern Virginia on Monday, 27-3.
The teams were tied, 2-2, 6:02 into the game, but from there, the Generals (3-0) enforced their will, tallying the next 24 goals, which spanned over 45 minutes of game action, to cruise past the Knights (3-2) by the 24-goal margin.
Sophomore attacker
Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) and junior attacker
Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) each had a game-high six points. Schwab totaled two goals and a career-best four assists to go with three ground balls and a caused turnover. Faria notched a career-best six goals on seven shots.
Senior midfielder
Kit McNiff (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) registered four goals and one assist, while first-year attacker
Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) notched four goals on five shots. First-year attacker
Alex Petras (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) had two goals and one assist for three points, while sophomore midfielder
Jenny Lisovicz (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) tallied three assists.
First-year midfielder
Ginny Taylor (Madison, N.J./Madison) had two goals. Senior attacker
Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park), junior midfielder
McKenna Edmondson (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and sophomore midfielder
Christina Cavallo (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes' School) each totaled one goal and one assist. In all, the Blue and White had 13 players notch at least one goal and 15 register at least one point.
W&L outshot Southern Virginia, 39-4, in the game and 17-1 in the second half. The Generals held a commanding 24-8 advantage in draw controls with sophomore midfielder
Blake Cote (Bedford, N.Y./Westminster School) grabbing a career-best 11. The Blue and White led in ground balls, 21-12, and only committed 11 turnovers compared to 18 for SVU.
First-year
Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) started in goal for W&L and made one save with two goals allowed in 30 minutes. Junior
Sam Sunar (Montville, N.J./Mountain Lakes) played the final 30 minutes and gave up one goal. Sophomore Jessica Webb saw the full 60 minutes of action for the Knights, making eight saves.
This is the third time in program history the team has scored 27 goals in a contest. W&L also had 27 against Ferrum in 2001 and against Cabrini in the NCAA Tournament in 2018.
The victory extended the team's record-setting home win streak to 23 games, dating back to March 17, 2018.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they play at 16th-ranked Mary Washington at 12:00 pm.
