Wielechowski's five points pace W&L offense in 5-0 win over SVU

LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore midfielder Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) produced five points and had a hand in the first three goals scored in the Washington and Lee women's soccer team's 5-0 win over Southern Virginia on Thursday afternoon.

W&L improves to 4-0 overall with the win, and it marks the first time since the 2009 season that the Generals have won each of their first four games of the campaign. The Knights fall to 1-4 overall with the loss.

The Generals took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when sophomore forward Lindsay White's (Greenville, S.C./JL Mann) short-range shot was stopped by the keeper, but Wielechowski needed just one touch to shoot and score. In the 44th minute, Wielechowski saw a shot of her own saved by the keeper, before junior midfielder Madeleine Becker (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) finished the chance with a one-touch shot into the net as well.

In the 68th minute, Wielechowski received a long through ball from first-year defender Emma Mansfield (Washington, D.C./The Potomac School (Va.)) and scored for her third goal of the season and her first career multi-goal game.

Sophomore forward Ava Boussy (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) notched her fifth goal of the year in the 80th minute, dribbling the ball up and beating a defender inside the box for the tally. W&L capped the scoring in the 89th minute, as senior midfielder Elle Prillaman (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) found junior forward Emily Leding (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy) on a pass up the middle of the field, as Leding found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

Wielechowski's five total points in the contest marked a career high, as she tallied a game-high five shots and four on goal. Boussy's goal was her team-leading fifth of the campaign and was one of her four total shots. Boussy has scored at least one goal in all four games this season. Senior midfielder Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) also shot four times and put two attempts on goal.

Junior goalkeepers Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) and Jasmine Furin (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield School) split the game in goal. Coombs (3-0) earned the win by playing the first half, while Furin played all 45 minutes of the second half. The W&L defense performed strongly as well, allowing zero shots on goal to produce the clean sheet.

For the Knights, sophomore midfielder Makinna Winterton led the way with three shots, sophomore midfielder Racquel Whatcott shot twice and first-year midfielder Anni Hall got one shot off to total six SVU shots in the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Trueman (1-4) made seven saves across 90 minutes of play in the losing effort.

W&L held a 21-6 total shot advantage in the contest, outshooting the Knights by a 12-2 margin in the first half, and W&L also held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Generals will return to action and get back to ODAC play on Sunday, March 21, when they host Virginia Wesleyan at 2:00 pm.
