Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Coombs preserves 1-0 W&L win over VWU with pair of clutch saves

LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior goalkeeper Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) made a pair of key saves, including a one handed-diving attempt in the 89th minute, as the Washington and Lee women's soccer team defeated Virginia Wesleyan, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.

With the Generals (5-0, 4-0 ODAC) ahead 1-0 with 64 seconds remaining in the game, Virginia Wesleyan (3-2, 3-2 ODAC) first-year defender Alex Soteriou fired a shot from the right of the center of the 18-yard box, headed towards the bottom left corner of the goal. Coombs (4-0) dove to her right, stopped the shot with her outstretched right hand and corralled the loose ball before the oncoming Marlin attacker could get a secondary shot off.

Coombs' first save of the game was another key stop. VWU junior defender Mackenzie Kerns shot a low line-drive attempt from the far side of the 18-yard box, but Coombs was able to dive to her left and knock the shot away before it crossed to the top right corner.

W&L's tally on the scoreboard came in the fifth minute of the contest when senior forward Sydney von Rosenberg (Boerne, Texas/Boerne-Samuel V. Champion) found a second of space between a pair of Marlin defenders. Moving to her right from just inside the 18, von Rosenberg fired a curling right-footed attempt into the top right corner past the outreached hand of first-year goalkeeper Rachel Quigley.

The W&L defensive unit also did its part to preserve the clean sheet, allowing eight total shots, but just three on goal. Coombs made all three save attempts in her 90 minutes of action to record her 11th career shutout.

Offensively, von Rosenberg tallied two shots in the game and put one on goal. First-year defender Louisa Bynum (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) led the team with three shots in the game, while junior midfielder Madeleine Becker (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy), sophomore midfielder Caitlin Barnes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) and sophomore forward Ava Boussy (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) each shot twice.

For the Marlins, first-year midfielder Caroline Smith and senior forward Reina Araujo both shot twice, with Araujo putting one attempt on target. Quigley (2-1) played all 90 minutes in goal for VWU and made three saves.

W&L outshot the Marlins, 14-8, in the game, which included an 8-4 edge in shots in the second half. The Generals also earned seven corner kicks and conceded two, while holding a 4-0 advantage in second-half corners.

The Generals will travel to Shenandoah on Thursday for their next game, with the contest getting underway at 7:00 pm.
