LEXINGTON, Va. – A strong and steady offensive performance led the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 5-1 win over Ferrum on Sunday afternoon on Watt Field.
The Generals (2-0-0, 2-0-0 ODAC) opened the scoring in the game in the 17th minute when first-year defender
Cameron Grainger (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) curled in a corner kick that slipped through the keeper's hands and into the side of the net. Sophomore forward
Lindsay White (Greenville, S.C./JL Mann) provided the team's second score in the 27th minute, as she dribbled up the field and in from the left sideline, and unleashed a long distance strike that found the back of the net.
Ferrum's (0-1-1, 0-1-1 ODAC) only goal came at the 43:44 mark in the game, as first-year forward Sarah Crawford gathered a loose ball in the box and put it in the goal.
W&L senior midfielder
Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) helped the Generals pull away for good in the second half, when she scored in the 59th minute and then again just 23 seconds later following a precise through ball from White in the box. Sophomore forward
Ava Boussy (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) rounded out the scoring in the contest when she finished a shot that was sent ahead from the midfield by junior forward
Emily Leding (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy).
Senior forward
Sydney von Rosenberg (Boerne, Texas/Boerne-Samuel V. Champion) led the W&L offense with seven shots and put four attempts on goal. Hoeh tallied five total shots and three on goal, as her two goals marked her first career multi-goal performance. Five other Generals each had multiple shots on the contest.
Junior goalkeeper
Jasmine Furin (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield School) (1-0) earned the win after playing the first 30:27 of the game. First-year
Sydney Smith (Demascus, Md./Demascus) played the remainder of the first half and junior
Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) worked all 45 minutes of the second half. A strong performance from the W&L defense yielded just one shot on goal for the game.
The trio of Crawford, senior midfielder Ysabella Bettilyon and senior forward Casey Raggett shot three times total for Ferrum, with Crawford's goal being the only shot on target. Sophomore goalkeeper Abbey Hayes (0-1-1) took the loss, as she played all 90 minutes and made 11 saves.
The Generals controlled the ball for a majority of the game and finished with a 32-3 edge in total shots, including a 17-1 margin in shots on goal. The second-half shot margin favored the Generals, 17-0, as W&L also earned seven corner kicks to none for the Panthers.
W&L will get back on the pitch on Sunday when the team travels to Eastern Mennonite for a 3:00 pm kick-off.
