Sholes scores late, Generals tie Roanoke, 1-1, in season opener

SALEM, Va. – Sophomore defender Austin Sholes (Westport, Conn./Staples) scored the equalizing goal late in the second half, as the Washington and Lee men's soccer team salvaged a season-opening draw, 1-1, on the road against Roanoke on Sunday afternoon.

With the Maroons (0-0-2, 0-0-2 ODAC) leading in the 85th minute, Sholes picked up a loose ball in a scrum in front of the net and beat the keeper to equalize. Both teams had their share of chances to win in the two overtime periods with four shots apiece, but neither side found the back of the net.

Roanoke took the initial lead of the game in the 35th minute when a foul occurred in the box. Junior forward Liam Camilleri took the penalty kick and put it past junior keeper Michael Nyc (Kildeer, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) for the game's first tally.

First-year forward Adrian Zimmerman (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) led the Generals' (0-0-1, 0-0-1 ODAC) offense with six total shots in the game, with two attempts on goal. Senior midfielder Harris Salom (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) finished with four shots and two on goal, while sophomore midfielder Michael Kutsanzira (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Putnam Science Academy (Conn.)) shot three times.

Nyc (0-0-1) played all 110:00 of the game in goal for the Generals and stopped four out of five Roanoke shots on goal.

Camilleri was one of four Maroons to tally two shots in the contest. Sophomore forward Gabriel Hendi and junior midfielder Alec Taitague took one shot each. Junior goalkeeper Zach Behe (0-0-2) made five saves in 110 minutes of action in goal for Roanoke.

For the game, the Generals outshot the Maroons, 21-10, including an 8-2 edge in the opening half. W&L finished with six shots on goal to five for Roanoke, while both teams earned five corner kicks.
