FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its conference players of the week on Monday for the week ending February 21, and Washington and Lee seniors
Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) and
William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) earned Basketball Player of the Week honors.
In the team's only game last week, Hughes was the centerpiece to W&L's 76-62 comeback win over Emory & Henry with a career-high 29 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the floor. The Generals were trailing by as many as 11 points in the first quarter, before Hughes scored six points in a row to kick-start the comeback.
She also finished the game with seven rebounds and two assists, plus four steals and two blocks on the defensive end. Hughes' 29 points also boosted her career point total to 963, leaving her 37 points away from becoming the 14th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
Brueggeman led the Generals to a pair of ODAC victories last week. He averaged 30.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game while shooting 55.9 percent (19-of-34) from the field, 61.9 percent (13-of-21) from distance and 90.0 percent (9-of-10) from the foul line.
In a 98-85 win against Emory & Henry on Tuesday, Brueggeman totaled 28 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals, while becoming the 28th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points.
Brueggeman followed that with a career-best 32 points, eight rebounds, two assists and one steal in a 93-87 victory at Shenandoah on Friday. In the contest, he broke the program's single-game record for made three-pointers with eight. He shot 8-of-13 from beyond the arc in the contest. He also moved into a tie for third on the program's all-time three-pointers list, as he now has 167 made in his four seasons.
The men's basketball team gets back to action on Wednesday night, hosting Randolph at 7:00 pm, and the women next play on Thursday night against Shenandoah at home at 7:00 pm.
