Offense booms in second half, Generals defeat Guilford, 7-0, in opener

GREENSBORO, N.C. – A flurry of six second-half goals propelled the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 7-0 season-opening road win over Guilford on Sunday afternoon.

With time winding down in the first half, and the game still scoreless, the Generals' (1-0, 1-0 ODAC) defense played a long ball up ahead that brought the Guilford (0-1, 0-1 ODAC) keeper off her line. W&L sophomore forward Ava Boussy (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) deflected the ball away from the keeper and shot from 15 yards out from the left side into the empty net for the game's first tally with just 44 seconds remaining in the half.

After the first 16 minutes of the second half had gone by with no further scoring, the Generals scored twice just 31 seconds apart in the 62nd minute, first from sophomore forward Lindsay White (Greenville, S.C./JL Mann) and second from senior forward Sydney von Rosenberg (Boerne, Texas/Boerne-Samuel V. Champion).

First-year defender Cameron Grainger (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) scored the team's fourth goal on a free kick from 40 yards out in the 68th minute, followed by scores from sophomore midfielder Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) in the 70th minute and junior forward Emily Leding (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy) in the 81st and 90th minutes.

Leding shot four times and put two shots on goal, while Boussy led the squad with five total shots and four on target. White shot four times and had three shots on goal, as she and Grainger both finished with a goal and an assist.

Junior goalkeepers Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (1-0) and Jasmine Furin (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield School) split time in goal for the Generals in the win. Coombs earned the win and was not required to make a save across the first 64:07 of the game, while Furin made two stops over the final 25:53.

For the Quakers, sophomore midfielder Crystal Rivas led the team with two shots, while four other players shot once each. Sophomore defender Gracie Mayer and sophomore Deanna Schlott both had one shot on goal. Senior keeper Morgan Malikowski (0-1) surrendered six goals and made eight saves over the first 80:48. Junior goalkeeper Aubrey Gunther played the final 9:12 and allowed one goal.

W&L outshot Guilford, 24-6, in total shots for the game, including a 15-2 margin in attempts on goal.

The Generals will return to the pitch on Sunday, February 28, when they host Ferrum in a 2:00 pm ODAC contest.
