WINCHESTER, Va. — Senior forward
William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) broke the Washington and Lee men's basketball single-game record for made three-pointers with eight in leading the Generals to a 93-87 victory at Shenandoah on Friday.
With 8:16 left in the contest, W&L (3-1, 3-1 ODAC) trailed, 74-67, which marked its largest deficit of the night. A layup by senior forward
Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) trimmed the lead to five (74-69), and then Brueggeman's seventh three-pointer of the game pulled the Blue and White to within two, 74-72, with 6:47 on the clock.
The Hornets (0-6, 0-6 ODAC) answered with a bucket by junior guard Anthony Trammell to stretch the lead back to four, but a jumper by sophomore guard
Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) brought the Generals to within two (76-74) with 5:58 left in the contest.
With four minutes on the clock, Shenandoah led by three (79-76), but then sophomore guard
Jack Lewis (Rockville, Md./Sidwell Friends) was fouled and sent to the line. He made his first, but missed the second. First-year forward
Jack d'Entremont (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) tipped in the miss to tie the game, 79-79.
A pair of free throws by first-year guard Matthew Anderson put the Hornets back up two (81-79), but a three-pointer by Manigault off an assist from Brueggeman gave W&L an 82-81 lead with 3:18 left in the game. After a stop on defense, Breuggeman set the program's single-game record for triples with his eighth of the contest in front of his own bench to stretch the Blue and White lead to 85-81 with 2:54 on the clock.
Shenandoah converted two-pointers on each of its next two trips, sandwiched around a jumper by d'Entremont, as the Generals held an 87-85 margin with 1:48 left in the game. Junior guard
Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) was then fouled with 57 seconds remaining, splitting a pair of free throws to extend the lead to three (88-85).
After another W&L stop, Shenandoah was forced to play the foul game, and the Blue and White made 5-of-6 from the foul line over the final 30 seconds to hold on for the six-point win.
Brueggeman finished with a game-high and career-high 32 points on 9-of-15 from the floor, 8-of-13 from beyond the arc and 6-of-6 from the foul line. He also had eight rebounds and two assists. The former W&L record of seven three-pointers made in a game had been done nine times previously, including most recently by Brueggeman on January 22, 2020.
With his eight three-pointers, Brueggeman moved into a tie for third on the Generals' career list with 167. Chris Halkitis '07 also made 167 in his career. Andy Kleinlein '17 is second all-time with 189.
d'Entremont registered a career-best 23 points on 9-of-10 from the floor. He also had eight rebounds. Lamendola finished with 10 points, four assists and four rebounds.
The Generals shot 50.0 percent (33-of-66) from the floor, 43.3 percent (13-of-30) from long range and 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the foul line. Shenandoah shot just 28-of-67 (41.8 percent) from the field, but grabbed 15 offensive rebounds to stay in the game.
Sophomore guard Jaylen Williams led the Hornets with 24 points and eight rebounds, while junior guard Zach Garrett totaled 20 points, four rebounds and three assists.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they host Randolph at 7:00 pm at Holekamp Gym.
