LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore guard
Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) tied a career-high with 22 points to lead the Washington and Lee men's basketball team to an 86-65 victory over Randolph on Wednesday at Holekamp Gym.
The WildCats (3-6, 3-4 ODAC) led 27-26 with 6:54 left in the first half, but a 21-5 run over the final seven minutes of the first and the first two minutes of the second gave the Generals (4-1, 4-1 ODAC) a 15-point advantage. First-year forward
Jack d'Entremont (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) started the run with a jumper, and then a steal and layup by senior forward
William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) pushed the lead to three, 30-27.
Junior guard
Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) dropped in a layup, and d'Entremont followed with a jumper to extend the margin to seven (34-27) with 3:42 on the clock. After a free throw by Randolph, Lamendola split a pair of free throws and then canned a jumper.
The Wildcats made another free throw, and then sophomore guard
Cheick Toure (Silver Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends School) made back-to-back buckets to push the lead to 41-29 with 41 seconds remaining in the half. Junior guard Jerry Goodman buried a triple for Randolph to trim the Blue and White lead to nine (41-32) at the break.
Manigault put the game away for the Generals in the first couple of minutes in the second half. He drained three jumpers by the 18:41 mark to stretch the lead to 47-32. The W&L advantage did not fall below double digits the rest of the way, as the team cruised to the 21-point victory.
The Generals held a dominating 63-36 advantage on the glass, including a 25-9 edge on the offensive end. The Blue and White also held a 15-3 spread in second-chance points. The 63 rebounds are the most for W&L in at least 10 years.
Manigault had 22 points, a career-best 12 rebounds and three steals. Brueggeman added 12 points and seven rebounds. Lamendola totaled 11 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals, while sophomore guard
Jack Lewis (Rockville, Md./Sidwell Friends) had 11 points and five rebounds.
Senior forward
Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, to go with five blocks, four points, three assists and two steals. Mitchell now has 186 blocks in his career, which is four away from tying the program record of 190 held by Rob Smitherman '81.
First-year guard Jordan Phillips-McLyod led Randolph with 19 points and four rebounds, while junior guard Evan Makle added 18 points and three boards.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they host top-ranked Randolph-Macon at 2:00 pm. The contest will be Senior Day for W&L.
