Generals' Rally Falls Short in 69-64 Loss to Rose-Hulman

ARLINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee men's basketball team's rally over the final three minutes came up just short in a 69-64 loss to Rose-Hulman on Saturday in the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Marymount.

The Generals (1-2) trailed 61-47 with 2:50 left in the game following a layup by the Fightin' Engineers (2-0). On the ensuing possession, first-year guard Thomas Feigin (New York, N.Y./Trevor Day School) drained a triple to trim the deficit to 11 (61-50). Following a turnover and a foul, senior guard Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) split a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 10, 61-51, with 2:19 on the clock.

After a miss by Rose-Hulman, sophomore forward Jack d'Entremont (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) converted an old-fashioned three-point play to bring the Blue and White to within seven (61-54). The Generals fouled immediately and the Fightin' Engineers made one of two attempts.

Junior guard Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) then dropped in a layup with 1:25 left to pull W&L to within six, 62-56. Rose-Hulman converted a layup with 55 seconds remaining, but Lamendola answered with a three-pointer to cut the lead to five (64-59) with 42 ticks on the clock.

The Fightin' Engineers' split another pair of free throws, and then a corner three by senior guard Tevin Panchal (Belmont, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) made it a one-possession game, 65-62, with 30 seconds to go in the contest. After another W&L foul, Rose-Hulman missed both free throws, but Lamendola missed a driving layup on the other end. The Fightin' Engineers then made their final four free throws, sandwiched around a layup by d'Entremont, to reach the final margin.

With 17 points on 7-of-14 from the field, d'Entremont led the Blue and White in scoring. He also had a team-best 10 rebounds and four assists. Sophomore forward Robert DiSibio (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) finished with 12 points and six rebounds.

Junior forward Terry Hicks and junior guard Max Chaplin led Rose-Hulman with 13 points each, while Hicks also added 12 rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Fightin' Engineers shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) from the field and 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from beyond the arc. The Generals struggled to find their rhythm all game, finishing at 33.3 percent (22-of-66) from the floor and 26.3 percent (10-of-38) from long range.

With the loss, the Generals play in the consolation game of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament against Ramapo on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
