Generals fight back at Bridgewater for 2-2 draw

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's soccer team overcame a two-goal deficit and came away with a 2-2 draw on the road against Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon.

With the draw, the Generals' record now stands at 7-2-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the ODAC, while the Eagles are now 9-1-2 overall and 2-0-2 in conference play.

Trailing by a score of 2-0 through the first 28 minutes, W&L cut into the Bridgewater lead as sophomore defender Cameron Grainger (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) scored from the top of the box after receiving a pass from senior forward Emily Leding (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy) with 16:48 to play in the half.

W&L then tied things up in the 53rd minute on a corner kick taken by senior forward Madeleine Becker (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy). Becker hit an in-swinging cross which was met on the near post by a diving Leding, who headed the ball inside the left post to equalize.

No shots were taken in the first overtime, however Bridgewater attempted two of the three total shots in the second overtime. All three shots in the final 10 minutes were off target.

The Eagles' goals came inside the first five minutes of the contest, as sophomore midfielder Ashley Sabatino scored in the third minute and sophomore defender Maren Dougherty scored in the fifth minute.

Leding's three points paced the W&L offense, and it marked her second career game with both a goal and an assist. She finished with a game-high five shots, while Becker, senior midfielder Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga), junior midfielder Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) and first-year midfielder Ann Riley Huber (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents' Episcopal) each attempted two shots.

Senior goalkeeper Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (6-2-2) made four saves across all 110 minutes of game time.

Sabatino and Dougherty combined for three total shots and they put each attempt on goal. Senior forward Angel Finch tallied a team-high three shots. Senior goalkeeper Sydney Davis (9-1-2) played the entirety of the game and made three saves.

The 2-1 shot advantage for the Eagles in the second overtime gave them the edge for the game, 15-14, as both teams took seven shots in the first half and six shots in the second half. Bridgewater earned six corner kicks in the game, while W&L took three.

The Generals will return to action on Tuesday when they host Guilford in a 6:00 pm ODAC matchup.
