LEXINGTON, Va. – Four second-half goals powered the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 5-0 win over Guilford on Tuesday evening.
Leading by a 1-0 halftime score, W&L (8-2-2, 3-1-2 ODAC) junior defender
Caroline Lawson (White Post, Va./Highland School) doubled the team's lead in the 55th minute after she gathered a loose ball inside the six-yard box following a corner kick and fired it into the back of the net with her left foot.
Lawson's score sparked the Generals' offense to three more goals over the next eight minutes. Sophomore midfielder
Emma Mansfield (Washington, D.C./The Potomac School) picked up her second goal of the year in the 58th minute and sophomore defender
Caroline Christianson (Annandale, Va./WT Woodson) scored her first goal of the year in the 61st minute. Senior defender
Chloe Rapier (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) capped the scoring with her first goal of the season in the 63rd minute, a header off a corner taken by sophomore defender
Cameron Grainger (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day).
W&L scored its first goal in the ninth minute when a shot by senior midfielder
Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) was saved, but the rebound came right to the foot of junior midfielder
Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic), who one-timed a right-footed shot past the keeper.
Junior defender
Madison Sumatra (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood) led the team with two goals-accounted for, as she assisted on Mansfield's and Christianson's goals in the second half. Wielechowski netted her team-leading sixth goal of the year, while Hoeh led the offense with seven shots and five attempts on goal, in addition to her fourth assist of the season, tied for the team best.
Senior goalkeepers
Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (7-2-2) and
Jasmine Furin (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield School) combined for the team's seventh shutout of the season. Coombs played the first 62:49 and made three saves, while Furin made one save over the final 27:11 to extend her consecutive shutout minutes streak to 632:12.
Guilford (7-4-1, 1-3-1 ODAC) was led on offense by junior defender Madison Green, who tallied three shots and one attempt on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Ady Franken (6-4-1) played all 90 minutes and made 11 saves in the losing effort.
W&L finished with a 40-6 advantage in total shots, the third time this season with at least 40 attempts in a game, and also earned 16 corner kicks on the night to none for the Quakers.
The Generals will return to the pitch on Saturday when they take on Virginia Wesleyan on the road at 6:00 pm.
