Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 1 Generals move past H-SC, 1-0, in ODAC Quarterfinals

LEXINGTON, Va. – A goal from sophomore forward Adrian Zimmerman (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and a penalty-kick save by first-year Matt Semcesen (Waxhaw, N.C./Marvin Ridge) highlighted the Washington and Lee men's soccer team's 1-0 ODAC Quarterfinal win over Hampden-Sydney on Saturday afternoon.

In the 13th minute and the game still scoreless, the Tigers (6-8-2) were awarded a penalty kick on a handball call inside the box. H-SC junior forward Michael Ogenyi was selected as the shot-taker, but he had his attempt saved by Semcesen, as the shot went to the middle of the frame and was kicked away by Semcesen.

After more than 56 minutes of scoreless play, junior midfielder Michael Kutsanzira (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Putnam Science Academy (Conn.)) found Zimmerman with a pass inside the box. Zimmerman finished on his shot from close range as the Generals gained the 1-0 advantage.

Despite seven H-SC shots throughout the second half, the Generals controlled the offensive chances with 14 shots, and also limited the Tigers to no shots on goal over the final 45 minutes. The Tigers had two shots bounce off the post during the game, including one in the second half that was cleared by the W&L defense before it could cross the goal line.

Zimmerman's goal was his sixth of the season, tied for second most on the team, while Kutsanzira's assist was his ODAC-leading 10th of the season. In addition, Kutsanzira's 10 assists ties the single-season program record that was set by Dylan Ritch '19 during the 2018 season. Zimmerman finished with a game-high seven shot attempts, with three shots on goal.

The Generals' 14-0-2 overall record through 16 games this season continues to be the longest run before the first loss in program history. Overall, the 16 straight games without a loss is just one short of tying the program record that was set from 2018-19.

Semcesen started and played the first half, and he saved the only shot on goal that he faced. Junior Rye McMillen (Fairfax, Va./The Heights School) (5-0-1) played the second half and did not face a shot on goal.

For the Tigers, junior midfielder Boyce Purdie, sophomore midfielder Devin Kohout and sophomore forward Emory Davis each tallied a team-high two shots. Senior goalkeeper Ian Fitzgerald (3-7-2) played all 90 minutes in goal and made four saves.

W&L claimed a 21-11 advantage in shot attempts for the game and they earned 11 corner kicks to three for the Tigers.

The Generals will be back in action on Wednesday when they host the ODAC Semifinals. The opponent will be determined by the advancing team in the No. 5 seed Roanoke vs. No. 4 seed Randolph quarterfinal game, which is being played tonight at 6:00 pm. The start time for the semifinal matchup is yet to be determined.
