No. 1 Generals fall to Randolph in OT of ODAC Semifinals

LEXINGTON, Va. – The top-ranked and top-seeded Washington and Lee men's soccer team fell by a 3-2 score in overtime at the hands of fourth-seeded Randolph in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament on Wednesday evening.

With time winding down in the first overtime period, Randolph (14-2-2) drew a foul inside the box and claimed a penalty kick opportunity with 30 seconds remaining. Senior forward Evan Blow then scored with his left foot inside the right post to end the game and send the WildCats to victory.

Trailing by a score of 2-1 in the 77th minute, W&L (14-1-2) junior midfielder John Peterson (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) made a run up the right side and into the box with the ball. Peterson made his way around a defender on the end line and centered a pass, where junior defender Tyler Smith (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes) scored inside the left post to equalize and ultimately send the game to overtime.

The WildCats scored first in the 26th minute on a goal from junior midfielder Noah Carney. The Generals responded just six minutes later on junior midfielder Samuel Bass's (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) team-high 11th goal of the season. Bass received a back-heeled pass from sophomore forward Adrian Zimmerman (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) at the top of the left side of the box, before finishing the chance.

Randolph then took a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute when sophomore midfielder Tucker Leverone scored off a saved shot that was initially taken by sophomore defender Tory Brown.

Bass and Smith each took two shots in the game and put one attempt on goal apiece. Junior midfielder Michael Kutsanzira (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Putnam Science Academy (Conn.)) led the offense with three attempts, while Zimmerman and Peterson also took a pair of shots each.

First-year goalkeeper Matt Semcesen (Waxhaw, N.C./Marvin Ridge) played the first half and allowed one goal, while junior Rye McMillen (Fairfax, Va./The Heights School) played the final 54:30 and made two saves with two goals allowed.

The loss for the Generals snaps a 16-game unbeaten streak, which was the longest run without a loss to begin a season in program history. It also marks the longest single-season unbeaten streak and was one game away from tying the longest overall stretch without a loss in program history (17 straight, 2018-19).

Blow led the WildCats' offense with five shots and two on goal, while Carney attempted three times and put two shots on frame. Senior goalkeeper Zach Aylor (14-2-2) played all 99:30 in goal and made four saves.

The Generals, currently ranked No. 1 in Region VI heading into the ODAC semifinal round, now look to receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA selection show will air on Monday at 1:00 pm at NCAA.com.
