FERRUM, Va. – Junior midfielder
Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) scored two early goals to help the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 5-0 win on the road against Ferrum on Wednesday evening.
The win marks the fourth straight for the Generals, and they improve to 11-2-2 overall and 6-1-2 in the ODAC. The Panthers fall to 3-12-1 overall and 2-7 in league play with the loss.
Wielechowski scored the team's first goal in just the fourth minute of the game, as she headed in a corner cross that was taken by sophomore defender
Emma Mansfield (Washington, D.C./The Potomac School). Wielechowski scored again in the 13th minute from close range when sophomore defender
Liz Sullivan (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappen Zee) found her on a slick pass through the defense from the end line.
The game remained at a 2-0 score until the 41st minute when sophomore defender
Cameron Grainger (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) scored on a long-range shot after senior forward
Emily Leding (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy) settled a clear and led Grainger into her shot with a short pass up field.
Sullivan capped the four-goal first half when she scored with just over a second left after making a long run up the middle of the field.
Junior midfielder
Caitlin Barnes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) scored the final goal in the 51st minute after Leding and senior midfielder
Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) set her up with precise passing.
Wielechowski took three shots in the game, while her two goals propel her to a team-high nine for the season. Sullivan logged her first goal and second assist of the campaign and Leding's two assists give her five on the season. Hoeh took one shot in the game, and her assist was her team-leading sixth this season.
Senior goalkeeper
Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (10-2-2) earned the win after she made one save over the first 55:27. Senior
Jasmine Furin (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield School) played the final 34:33 and extended her consecutive shutout minutes streak to 672:34.
Ferrum junior midfielder Allison Setlak and first-year forward Ashlynn Mitcham took one shot in the game and they both put their attempts on goal. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Hayes (2-9-1) played all 90 minutes and made seven saves.
W&L outshot Ferrum by a 17-3 margin, including 13 attempts on goal, and earned nine corner kicks to two for the Panthers.
The Generals will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Randolph-Macon for an 11:00 am kick-off in the regular season finale.
