HARRISONBURG, Va. — The 12th-ranked Washington and Lee field hockey team scored five goals in the first half en route to a 9-0 victory at Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday. The win marked the 200th in the career of Head Coach
Gina Wills.
The Generals (14-0, 7-0 ODAC) scored the first goal of the contest just 6:30 into the opening period, when junior forward
Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) sent a pass across the circle that junior forward
Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va. Norfolk/Academy) deflected into the cage.
The Blue and White added its second goal just 37 seconds later, as senior forward
Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) tallied her team-leading 13th of the season. Junior forward
Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) then scored with 3:31 left in the first to push the lead to 3-0. She carried the ball through the circle and fired a shot into the cage to record her goal.
The lead was extended to 4-0 with 6:24 left in the half. First-year forward
Kate Ruffin (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) received a pass on the left post from Fitzgerald. With the goalkeeper on her back, Ruffin spun to her right and slipped the ball inside the left post. The final goal of the period came from the stick of junior forward
Alexis Parks (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee).
W&L added four more goals to its total in the second half. Tysinger notched her second tally of the game, Muneses scored off an assist from Tysinger, junior forward
Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) notched her 12th of the year and Parks recorded her second of the night.
Tysinger led all players with two goals and one assist, while Parks had two scores. Fitzgerald and Muneses each totaled one goal and one assist.
The Generals led in shots, 31-7, and held a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners over the Royals (7-10, 0-7 ODAC).
Senior goalkeeper
Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) played all 60 minutes and made two saves. Junior Ann Ghally started for EMU and registered 11 saves in 30 minutes. First-year Marie Wilson saw the final 30 minutes of action and had one save.
With the nine goals, the Generals also set a new single-season goals record with 75. The squad broke the previous mark of 71 set in 2016.
With the victory, Wills now has a 200-79 overall record (.716 winning percentage) in 15 seasons to go with a 79-39 mark (.669 winning percentage) in seven years as the W&L head coach. Wills has also led the Blue and White to its highest national ranking in program history this year and the current 14-game winning streak is the longest in team history.
The Generals close out the regular season on Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan at 1:00 pm.
