Generals win Senior Day game over Shenandoah, 3-1

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's soccer team earned a 3-1 win over Shenandoah on Friday evening to celebrate Senior Day in the team's regular season home finale.

A pair of seniors teamed up for W&L's (10-2-2, 5-1-2 ODAC) first goal with 63 seconds to play in the first half, as forward Madeleine Becker (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) hit an in-swinging corner cross that midfielder Erin Hoeh (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) re-directed on frame. Hoeh's attempt bounced off a Shenandoah (9-8-1, 5-3-1 ODAC) defender, but the ball had enough power behind it to cross the goal line before it could be cleared.

The Hornets tied the game at one goal apiece in the 58th minute when first-year forward Saige Musser scored on a free kick from the right side. Hoeh responded for W&L just 10 minutes later, when she received a pass at the top of the 18 from junior midfielder Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic). Hoeh fired a right-footed shot inside the left post, past the diving keeper.

The Generals added to their lead just two minutes later, as Wielechowski headed in a cross in the middle of the box that was sent in by first-year midfielder Ann Riley Huber (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents' Episcopal) from the right side.

Hoeh's pair of goals marked her first brace since March 7, 2021, in a 9-0 win against Eastern Mennonite, as she now has five goals on the season. Wielechowski's three-point effort included her first assist of the season, as she and Hoeh are tied for the team high in points (15). Huber logged her fifth assist of the season, tied with Hoeh for the most on the team, while Becker's assist was her third of the year.

Hoeh (7) and Wielechowski (5) led the W&L offense in total shots, and sophomore midfielder Louisa Bynum (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) tallied four attempts. Senior goalkeeper Grace Coombs (Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews School) (9-2-2) started and covered 84:11 in net, making three saves. Senior Jasmine Furin (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield School) played the final 5:49 to extend her consecutive shutout minutes streak to 638:01.

Musser led the Shenandoah offense with three shots and sophomore defender Lexi DiSora tallied two shots. First-year goalkeeper Karissa Dominick (3-4-1) took the loss after she made four saves and allowed three goals over the first 69:55. First-year Kasie Kilmer covered the final 20:05 in goal and made one save.

W&L took 14 shots in both halves to finish with a 28-7 shot advantage. The Generals earned seven corner kicks and conceded two.

The Generals will be on the road for their next game, traveling to Ferrum for a 7:00 pm start on Wednesday night.
