W&L Volleyball Claims 3-2 Victory Over Randolph-Macon

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team used a 5-1 run midway through the fifth set en route to a 3-2 victory over Randolph-Macon on Wednesday at Holekamp Gym.

The Generals (19-5, 10-0 ODAC) claimed the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-20. The Yellow Jackets (14-5, 9-1 ODAC) answered by winning the third, 25-16 and the fourth, 25-20.

In the fifth, R-MC pulled ahead 6-5, after a W&L attack error. From there, senior outside hitter Val Sokolow (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) tallied a kill and junior setter Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) and senior middle blocker Katy Blain (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) recorded a combination block to put the Blue and White in front, 7-6.

The Yellow Jackets tied the score, 7-7, on a service error, but kills by Sokolow and sophomore outside hitter Sydney Heifner (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) sandwiched around a bad set by R-MC gave W&L a 10-7 edge.

A combo block by the Yellow Jackets closed the gap to 10-8, but Heifner then notched back-to-back kills to push the lead to 12-8. Randolph-Macon claimed the next two points to trim the gap to 12-10.

The Generals went up by three (13-10) following a kill by Heifner, and then senior middle blocker Sydney Koch registered a kill to put the score at 13-11. The Blue and White closed out the set, 15-11 and the match after a kill by Heifner and an attack error by the Yellow Jackets.

Heifner finished the night with a career-high 24 kills and added 15 digs. The 24 kills are tied for the 10th-most in a single-match in program history. She also had 73 total attempts, which marks the third-most in a single-match in team history.

Senior right side Carson Allsteadt (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and first-year outside hitter Avery Myers (New York, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day School) each had nine kills. Webb tabulated 42 assists, five aces, five digs and four blocks.

The Blue and White totaled a season-high 86 digs. Sokolow and first-year setter Allie Buchholz (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) each led the team with 18. Junior defensive specialist Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) notched 17.

Junior outside hitter Grace Parker paced R-MC with 15 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore right side Megan Bost totaled 13 kills and seven blocks. Senior setter Macguire Gubba had 41 assists, and 14 digs.

The Generals next compete at Cabrini on Saturday. W&L faces Widener in a neutral-site contest at 1:00 pm, and then plays Cabrini at 3:00 pm.
