Duggleby's Game-Winner Lifts No. 12 Generals to 2-1 Win at Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. — First-year forward Maddy Duggleby (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) scored with 9:33 left in the fourth quarter to lead the 12th-ranked Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 2-1 victory at Shenandoah on Wednesday.

Each team scored one goal in the second period, but neither squad found the back of the cage in the third to set up the deciding final period. The Generals (12-0, 5-0 ODAC) then earned a penalty corner with 9:44 left in the game. The ball was inserted to senior forward Stella Noels (Cambridge, Mass./Middlesex School) on the left side.

Noels quickly shot toward the goal, but senior goalkeeper Katie Garman stopped the shot, sending it to the top right of the circle. The Blue and White sent the ball back in toward the left side of the goal, and junior forward Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) then slipped a pass to Duggleby back on the right side. The quick pass to the right left an open cage for Duggleby, who then struck in the game-winner for W&L.

The Hornets (12-2, 5-1 ODAC) controlled possession for much of the contest, holding a 24-9 advantage in shots and a 23-3 margin in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) tied a personal-best with 10 saves to hold the Shenandoah offense to just one goal. Garman ended the night with six saves.

The Blue and White notched its first goal of the game 5:57 into the second quarter. On a counterattack, junior forward Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) controlled the ball in the center of the circle and slapped a shot toward the goal. Garman pushed it aside, but Tobeason corralled her own rebound on the right side. She then squeezed the ball just between Garman and the right post for her team-leading 11th score of the season.

With the victory, W&L set the program record for longest winning streak with 12. The previous record of 11 was done twice in 2005 and 2017.

The Generals return to action on Saturday against Randolph-Macon at 2:00 pm. W&L will honor its five seniors before the start of the contest.
