LEXINGTON, Va. — Led by two goals from senior forward
Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School), the 14th-ranked Washington and Lee field hockey team defeated 17th-ranked Lynchburg, 3-2, on Wednesday at the W&L Turf Field.
It took just 3:34 for the Generals (10-0, 4-0 ODAC) to assume a 1-0 advantage. On a counterattack, Weise carried the ball down the left side, and beat sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Brady one on one to give W&L a 1-0 advantage.
The Hornets (8-4, 3-1 ODAC) tied the contest just three minutes later off the stick of senior forward Emily Dudley.
In the second, Weise pushed the Blue and White back in front, 2-1, with 5:52 left in the half. Junior forward
Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) had the ball at the top of the circle and flicked a pass to Weise in the center. Weise quickly shot the ball into the right corner of the goal.
A little over four minutes later, junior forward
Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) extended the Generals' lead to 3-1, when she scored off a rebound. Senior forward
Stella Noels (Cambridge, Mass./Middlesex School) sent a shot in from the left side, which was saved. Tysinger was waiting on the left post and stuffed the ball in for her third tally of the year.
Lynchburg scored the final goal of the half and the contest with 49 seconds left on the clock in the second. Sophomore defender Aaryn Boatwright registered the goal on the right post off an assist from Dudley.
Both teams had chances over the final two periods with each team taking 10 shots over last 30 minutes, but the score of 3-2 proved to be the final margin. With her two tallies, Weise leads the team this year with 10.
Senior goalkeeper
Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) notched five of her eight saves over the third and fourth quarters. She played all 60 minutes with two goals allowed.
Brady saw all 30 minutes of action, stopping 14 shots with seven in each half. Boatwright and first-year Madison Mark each added a defensive save.
The Blue and White had a slight edge in shots for the game, 25-19, and Lynchburg led in penalty corners, 9-6. This marked the first victory for W&L over Lynchburg since the 2017 ODAC Championship game.
The Generals return to action on Thursday when they play at Meredith at 6:00 pm.
