Washington and Lee Announces Assistant Coaching Hires

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee Michael F. Walsh Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced the appointment of Megan Carroll and Taylor Steele as staff members within the Department of Athletics.

Carroll joins the women's soccer staff, while Steele will coach men's and women's swimming.

Carroll comes to W&L from Penn State-Harrisburg, where she served as an assistant women's soccer coach for the 2019 season.  Concurrently, she was also a behavior technician at The Vista School in Hershey, Pa.

In her role as assistant soccer coach, she was involved in all aspects of the program, including practice preparation, recruiting, program development and gameday coaching.  She helped lead the team to an 11-11-1 overall record, a runner-up finish in the North Eastern Athletic Conference and a bid to the ECAC women's soccer championship.

In addition to her coaching experience at PSU-Harrisburg, Carroll also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach for the men's and women's soccer teams at East Stroudsburg University, where she earned a master of science in sport management in 2019.

She helped mentor the women to a 30-11-5 record over two seasons, while the men posted a 20-13-4 overall mark.  The ESU women won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title in her first season and advanced to the NCAA Division II tournament both years.  Additionally, she was part of the staff tabbed the 2017 Division II Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year.  The East Stroudsburg men also won the 2017 PSAC Tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship that year as well.

Carroll also holds experience as a middle school girls' soccer assistant coach at Central Dauphin School District (2017), as a performance coach at Parisi Speed School (2018-19) and as a youth soccer instructor with Soccer Shots (2014-19) in Harrisburg, Pa.

As a player, Carroll was a four-year letterwinner and team captain as a senior for the women's soccer team at Bloomsburg University, where she earned a bachelor of arts in communication studies in 2016.  As a midfielder, she finished her career with 15 points on five goals and five assists.  After her collegiate career ended, she competed with the Washington Spirit of the National Women's Soccer League and the Inferno Rush of the United Women's Soccer League.  She was also a member of the Sandvikens IF Dam Division 1 Women's Soccer Team in Sandviken, Sweden in 2019.

Steele returns to Washington and Lee after serving as the head coach of the men's and women's swimming teams at Randolph College since the 2016-17 school year.  He had previously served as an assistant men's and women's swimming coach for the Generals from 2013-16.

At Randolph, Steele helped develop the teams from the ground floor, recruiting the first student-athletes in program history debuting both varsity programs in 2017-18.  The two teams have produced 41 program records and have been competitive at the ODAC Championships each season.

During his first stint in Lexington, Steele helped the W&L men's and women's teams combine to win five ODAC championships while producing 32 NCAA Division III Championship qualifiers.  He also helped coach W&L swimmers to eight All-America performances and helped mentor two swimmers (Brendan McHugh '17L, Tommy Thetford '18) for the U.S. Olympic Trials.

In addition to his work in the pool, Steele also served as assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Generals, helping aide W&L athletes in their training programs.

Prior to his arrival at W&L, Steele was a strength and conditioning and physical activity instructor/graduate assistant at Angelo State University, where he earned a master of education in coaching, sport, recreation and fitness administration in 2013.  He has also served as an assistant swimming coach with the West Houston Aquatics Team and as an area supervisor with Greater Houston Pool Management.

Steele's coaching experience also includes serving as the head swimming coach for the City of Georgetown, Texas from 2010-11, and he was an assistant swimming coach for the Forest Area Swimming Team in Pflugerville, Texas for much of the same time period.

Steele was also a pool manager and water safety instructor for the City of Georgetown.  He is a 2011 graduate of Southwestern University, earning a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology.  He served as a captain for the Pirates' swimming team, earning Scholar All-America honors as a senior.

Steele is a USAW Level 1 Certified Coach, who is also certified in CPR/AED and First Aid.
