LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team came away with a doubleheader split at Lynchburg on Saturday, falling in game one, 3-1, before taking game two by the same score.
The Generals (9-3, 3-1 ODAC) scored the first runs of game two, when senior right fielder
Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) scored on an error, followed by an RBI ground out from first-year second baseman
Colin Liebe (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill).
After Lynchburg (9-4, 1-1 ODAC) scored a run in the bottom of the third, the Generals scored their final run of the game in the top of the fourth as sophomore first baseman
Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) scored on a first-and-third play.
Senior
Tom Kellogg (San Antonio, Texas/Saint Mary's Hall) (2-0) came out of the bullpen and shined. He came on with runners on first and second in the bottom of the fifth with no outs and, after a walk, got a strikeout and a double play to escape the inning unscathed. Kellogg finished with eight strikeouts over the final five innings, and allowed no runs on four hits.
The Hornets struck first in game one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, with the second run coming a double to right from junior first baseman Avery Combs.
The Generals answered in the top of the third when senior catcher
Bryce Burnette (Hurt, Va./Gretna) hit a solo home run to left. Lynchburg scored its third run in the bottom of the inning to close the scoring.
Lynchburg pitcher Kinston Carson (3-0) earned the win in the first game with a seven-inning effort, allowing one run and striking out three. Junior pitcher Grayson Thurman got his third save of the season pitching the final two innings and struck out four, while not allowing a walk or a hit.

Carson McKoon (Chattanooga, Tenn./McCallie School) started game two and allowed one unearned run in four-plus innings of work, while allowing four hits and striking out three.
Senior
Jackson Thigpen (Potomac, Md./St. John's College) (2-1) suffered just his first loss of the season, after allowing three runs in 4.2 innings in the first game. Junior
Nate Cohen (Atlanta, Ga./North Springs) pitched 3.1 innings in relief of Thigpen and did not allow a run.
Junior shortstop
Jason Volpicelli (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI Catholic) led the way with four hits, including three in game one, while Wickman tallied three hits between the two games. Burnette singled and scored in game two, while his home run in game one was the first of his career.
For the Hornets, junior shortstop Parker Shaffer went 3-for-5 in game two and drove in the team's only run. Sophomore second baseman Garrett Jackson totaled three hits between the two games and scored once in game one.
Senior Hunter Campbell (2-2) took the loss for the Hornets in game two, after he allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts over seven innings of work.
The Generals will be back on the diamond on Tuesday, when they host Southern Virginia at 3:30 pm.
