Shuffler stymies SVU, Generals knock off Knights, 10-4

LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior right-hander Mason Shuffler (Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana) surrendered just three earned runs over a career-high seven innings to lead the Washington and Lee baseball team to a 10-4 win over Southern Virginia on Tuesday.

The Generals (10-3) fell behind in the first, after Shuffler allowed an unearned run to open the game, but W&L quickly gave him a lead when it scored three in the bottom half of the inning. Senior right fielder Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) tied the game with an RBI single to right, and the team took the lead on a double play ground ball that scored first-year center fielder Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison).

In the bottom of the second, the Generals capitalized on two SVU (9-5) miscues, as junior shortstop Jason Volpicelli (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI Catholic) scored on a failed pick-off attempt to third by the catcher, before Monson scored on a wild pitch on the next pitch.

SVU junior right fielder Mitch Tyse got the Knights back to within two runs when he launched a two-run home run to left in the top of the third. The Knights then pulled to a 5-4 deficit when junior center fielder Canon Anderson doubled home a run in the top of the sixth.

W&L pulled away for good in the seventh inning with four runs, highlighted by a two-run single to right off the bat of Perkins. Junior catcher Jack Giardino (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) then tacked on the final run with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.

Shuffler (2-0) earned the win, as his four total runs allowed came on nine hits and two walks. He added six strikeouts to his line as well. Junior Peyton McCann (Midlothian, Va./James River) worked the final two innings for the Blue and White, allowing no runs on one hit with two walks and a strikeout.

Monson tallied four hits at the dish, drove in one run, scored twice and stole a base. Perkins, Giardino and first-year left fielder Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va./James Madison) all recorded two hits and combined for three RBI and three runs scored. Giardino added two walks to get on base in four of his five plate appearances.

Tyse's two-run homer in the third was his lone hit of the game, while junior catcher Cole Campanile logged a 3-for-4 performance. Senior Riley Daniels (4-2) took the loss on the mound after allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits across the first four innings. First-year Will Parker gave up four runs (three earned) over the next three innings, before sophomore Zach Zalar surrendered one run in the eighth.

The Generals will return to the diamond on Wednesday when they host Bridgewater at 4:00 pm in their return to ODAC play.
