LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team suffered a 14-9 loss at the hands of Bridgewater on Wednesday in ODAC action.
The Generals fall to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the ODAC with the loss, while the win improves the Eagles to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.
After Bridgewater scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the first inning, W&L came back with four runs of its own in the bottom of the frame, led by a two-run single from first-year second baseman
Colin Liebe (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) to cap the inning.
However, Bridgewater's offense kept rolling when senior shortstop Jacob Talley hit a grand slam to left in the top of the second, followed by a seven-run fourth inning. An error from the Generals opened the frame, which went on to allow Bridgewater to score all seven runs with two outs in the inning. First-year first baseman Jake Dudley had the big hit in the frame, a two-run double to center.
First-year outfielder
Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison) tripled home two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, while junior shortstop
Jason Volpicelli (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI Catholic) drove in a run in the seventh and ninth innings.
Perkins led a group of four Generals to log three hits in the game, as the rookie notched six total bases in the contest, drove in two runs and scored once. Volpicelli finished the game with two hits and a season-high four RBI.
Senior right fielder
Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland), sophomore designated hitter
Jackson Gazin (Reisterstown, Md./Boys' Latin) and first-year center fielder
Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) were the other three W&L players to log three hits each, as the trio combined for three RBI and five runs scored.
First-year
John Raymond (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) (0-1) took the loss after allowing six runs over the first 1.2 innings.
Talley finished the game with four hits for the Eagles, with all four of his runs batted in coming on his grand slam. First-year third baseman Jeffrey Snider notched a three-hit game, while senior designated hitter JT Creed went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore pitcher Waring Garber (1-1) earned the win after entering the game in the second inning. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits over four innings of work.
The Generals will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Roanoke for a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is slated for 12:00 pm.
