No. 6 W&L Women's Lacrosse Downs CNU, 16-5

LEXINGTON, Va. — Junior attacker Dani Murray (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) and sophomore attacker Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) combined for seven goals, while senior defender Caitlin Anderson (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) totaled six caused turnovers to lead the sixth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a 16-5 victory over Christopher Newport on Wednesday at Watt Field.
 
The Generals (4-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 10:30 with goals by Murray, Faria and first-year midfielder Christina Cavallo (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes' School). The Captains (2-3) scored their first goal at the 15:08 mark off a shot by first-year attacker Kelsey Winters, but then an 8-0 burst over the next 17:46 of action secured the game for W&L.
 
Murray ignited the run with back-to-back tallies and then Faria notched the next two, giving the Generals a 7-1 advantage with 10:06 left in the half. First-year midfielder Jenny Lisovicz (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) scored off a feed from junior attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park), and sophomore attacker Janie Stillwell (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) then registered a goal off another assist from Shelley with 5:08 left in the half.
 
The final tally of the opening period came with 4:39 on the clock from first-year midfielder Blake Cote (Bedford, N.Y./Westminster School) with an assist from Murray to push the W&L advantage to 10-1 at halftime.
 
Murray then put the finishing touch on the 8-0 onslaught with a goal off a pass from Lisovicz to extend the Generals' lead to 11-1 with 27:22 left in the contest. Over the final 27 minutes of the game, W&L outscored CNU, 5-4, to reach the final margin of 16-5.
 
Murray ended the contest with four goals and one assist, while Faria notched three goals and one helper. Shelley totaled five points with two goals and three assists. She now has 88 assists in her career, which is the fourth-best total in program history. Melissa Coggins '16 is third on the list with 92.
 
The other seven goals for W&L were each scored by a different player, as the team had 10 players tally at least one goal. Anderson controlled the back line for the Generals with seven draw controls, six caused turnovers and three ground balls. Junior defender Catherine Arrix (Darien, Conn./Darien) also contributed three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
 
W&L had a 34-7 advantage in shots for the game and a 16-6 margin in draw controls. The Captains committed 22 turnovers, with the Generals causing 17 of those.
 
Senior goalkeeper Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) did not register a save in 46:15, but did have three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Sophomore Sam Sunar (Montville, N.J./Mountain Lakes) played 6:01 without a save and first-year Chloe Osen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) saw the final 7:44 of action.
 
First-year goalkeeper Becca Creekmore did all she could for CNU, making 10 saves to go with two caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Winters led the team with two goals.
 
The victory extended the team's program-record home winning streak to 21 games. The Generals return to action on Sunday when they host third-ranked Gettysburg at 1:00 pm.
