LEXINGTON, Va. — The sixth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team scored the final four goals of the game to defeat third-ranked Gettysburg, 12-9, on Sunday at Watt Field.
The Generals (5-1) trailed 9-8 with 11:40 remaining in the contest, after the Bullets (3-1) took a one-score advantage on a goal from junior midfielder Kerry McKeever. W&L evened the game just over a minute later when sophomore attacker
Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) scored off an assist from junior attacker
Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) with 10:33 on the clock.
Neither squad scored over the next six minutes of game action, with the Blue and White calling timeout with 4:41 remaining in the contest. Out of the break, first-year midfielder
Christina Cavallo (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes' School) received a pass near the top of the arc, and then slashed through the Gettysburg defense and beat senior goalkeeper Casey Cole on the right side of the cage to put W&L in front, 10-9.
Senior defender
Caitlin Anderson (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) won the ensuing draw control, and then senior attacker
Dani Murray (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) was awarded a free-position shot from the right side with 3:41 left in the game. She then beat Cole just inside the right post to extend the Generals' lead to two (11-9).
The Bullets won the draw to gain possession, but Anderson forced a turnover with 2:45 on the clock to give the ball back to the W&L offense. At the 1:46 mark, Murray drove toward the cage on the right side. Once a defender committed to her, she passed to Cavallo, who quickly fired a shot into the cage for her second goal of the game.
With the 12-9 advantage, first-year midfielder
Blake Cote (Bedford, N.Y./Westminster School) secured the draw control, and the Generals ran all but the final 10 seconds off the clock to pull out the three-goal victory. It marked the first win for W&L against Gettysburg since a 16-12 victory on April 10, 1993. The win also extended the Generals' program-record home winning streak to 22 games.
Faria led the team with four goals, while first-year attacker
Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) added three goals and one assist. Murray totaled two goals and one helper, while Cavallo had two scores. Shelley ended the game with a team-best three assists. Junior midfielder
Kit McNiff (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) also added one goal.
Anderson registered six ground balls, three caused turnovers and three draw controls. Cote led the team with four draw controls, and senior goalkeeper
Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) had four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
In 60 minutes, Gilbert made nine saves to pick up the victory. Senior goalkeeper Abbie Lee started for the Bullets, and stopped 10 shots with three goals allowed in 30 minutes. Cole played the entire second half, making five saves with nine goals allowed.
The Blue and White led in shots, 35-22, and in ground balls, 24-11. W&L also had 11 caused turnovers compared to just six for Gettysburg.
Senior attacker Liz Barr led the Bullets with three goals and one assist. Senior midfielder Courtney Patterson had two goals and four draw controls, and senior midfielder Ella Orzechowski chipped in one goal and two assists.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they host 10th-ranked Catholic at 12:00 pm.
