LEXINGTON, Va. – Despite loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Washington and Lee baseball team was unable to muster up another comeback win on Wednesday evening, falling to Southern Virginia, 10-9.
With the loss, the Generals fall to 8-2 overall on the season, while the Knights improved to 9-3 overall with the win.
Trailing by two runs entering the bottom of the ninth, the Generals' first two batters hit singles and moved up to third on a ground out. Senior
Bryce Burnette (Hurt, Va./Gretna) and first-year first baseman
Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va./James Madison) drew back-to-back walks to load the bases and score the ninth run, respectively. But SVU junior Mitch Tyse struck out the next batter, followed by a diving and potential game-saving play on a ground ball by third baseman Bridger Taylor to end the game.
After the Knights extended their lead to 8-4 through six and a half frames, the Generals struck for three runs in the bottom of the inning to start another comeback attempt. First-year left fielder
Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison) had an RBI ground and first-year center fielder
John Raymond (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) singled home a pair of runs in the inning. A run from W&L in the bottom of the eighth tied the game, before the Knights tacked on their final two runs in the top of the ninth.
SVU hung four runs on the Generals in the top of the second to get on the board first, starting with a solo home run to left off the bat of Tyse. The lead was extended to 5-0 in the top of the third, before the Generals came roaring back with a four-run bottom of the third. Sophomore designated hitter
Jackson Gazin (Reisterstown, Md./Boys' Latin) highlighted the frame with a two-run triple to left center.
The Knights added two runs in the top of the fourth to give them the 7-4 lead that held into the seventh.
Gazin and Erdmann both had two hits on the day, with Gazin driving in two runs and Erdmann driving in one. Junior shortstop
Jason Volpicelli (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI Catholic) and senior right fielder
Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) also recorded two hits each, as Volpicelli scored three runs, while Monson added an outfield assist in the game.

Ben Greer (Richmond, Va./Collegiate School) started on the mound for the Generals and earned a no decision after his 1.1-inning outing. Senior
Kenneth Hartzfeld (Marietta, Ga./Westminster School) (1-1) suffered the loss after SVU scored three runs in his 2.1 innings of work.
Tyse went 2-for-5 on the night, highlighted by his solo home run, and drove in three runs. Senior first baseman Cole Critchfield logged four hits, drove in two runs and scored once. Tyse also earned his first save of the season after getting the final two outs of the game with the bases loaded. Senior Riley Daniels (4-1) earned the win, despite allowing two runs on four hits over 1.2 innings.
The Generals will return to ODAC play for their next games, a doubleheader at Lynchburg on Saturday. First pitch for the first game is slated for 12:00 pm.
