Burnette caps Generals’ dramatic comeback win over Keystone

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior designated hitter Bryce Burnette (Hurt, Va./Gretna) capped off a seven-run eighth inning and six-run comeback win with a two-run double to give the Washington and Lee baseball team a dramatic 12-11 victory over Keystone on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing by a score of 11-5 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, sophomore first baseman Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) began W&L's (5-0) comeback attempt with an RBI single down the right field line. Wickman later scored on a wild pitch, followed by a two run single from first-year center fielder Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison).

Down just two runs, Perkins ended up scoring on a wild pitch to get the Generals back within a run. The next two W&L batters got on base to set up Burnette's dramatic double down the left-field line, as junior shortstop Jason Volpicelli (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI Catholic) and senior right fielder Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) scored on the play.

Keystone (0-2) threated for runs in the top of the ninth inning, but first-year John Raymond (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) got a fly out with the bases loaded to end the game and earn his first collegiate save.

The Giants looked to put the game away in the top of the eighth inning when they scored five runs, highlighted by a two-run double from sophomore pinch hitter Chris Hadsall, as they went ahead 11-5 after the frame.

Keystone scored one run in both the first and third innings to take the early lead, but the Generals countered with three in the bottom of the third, led by an RBI triple to deep center off the bat of Perkins.

The Giants regained the lead at 4-3 with two runs in the top of the fourth, before both teams scored once each in their offensive halves of sixth and seventh innings to set up the wild eighth inning.

Perkins led the W&L offense with a 4-for-5 performance that included a double, a triple, three RBI and two runs scored. Burnette and Wickman both finished with two hits and two RBI, while Volpicelli tallied a 2-for-5 effort with a run and a run driven in. Sophomore shortstop Jackson Gazin (Reisterstown, Md./Boys' Latin) notched two hits, walked once, drove in one run and scored three times.

Senior southpaw Carson McKoon (Chattanooga, Tenn./McCallie School) got a no decision, pitching three innings and allowing one earned run (four total). Senior Kenneth Hartzfeld (Marietta, Ga./Westminster School) (1-0) earned the win, followed by Raymond's save in the ninth.

For the Giants, junior left fielder Adam Kelly tallied four hits in five at bats, including a solo home run to left center in the third, and drove in three runs and scored twice. Sophomore catcher Julio Acosta went 2-for-3 at the plate, drove in one, scored three times and walked twice.

Junior righty Nathan Hinkley received a no decision after tossing 6.2 innings and allowing five earned runs on 10 hits. The Generals tagged senior Ramon Disla for five runs (four earned) in his one inning of work, while senior Matt Tarabola (0-1) suffered the loss.

The Generals will begin their seven-game road trip on Monday when they travel to N.C. Wesleyan for a 2:00 pm contest.
