Generals run season-opening win streak to six, defeat N.C. Wesleyan, 10-3

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Six runs after the sixth inning helped the Washington and Lee baseball team pull away from N.C. Wesleyan in its 10-3 win on Tuesday afternoon.

The win propels the Generals to 6-0 overall on the season, the first 6-0 start to a campaign since 1948. The Battling Bishops fall to 2-8 overall with the loss.

The Bishops took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, but the Generals' bats came alive in the fifth as first-year center fielder John Raymond (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, before sophomore third baseman Chapin Bassi (Concord, N.H./St. Paul's School) scored on a wild pitch. N.C. Wesleyan re-tied the game at two in the bottom of the fifth, before Bassi drove in a run and scored another in the top of the sixth.

Senior catcher Bryce Burnette (Hurt, Va./Gretna) scored on a wild pitch in the seventh, followed by a sac fly from sophomore first baseman Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) and a run-scoring error on the defense put the Generals up, 7-2, through seven innings.

N.C. Wesleyan tacked on its final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth, before W&L struck for three more runs in the top of the ninth to round out the scoring. First-year left fielder Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va./James Madison) highlighted the inning with a one-out, two-run single to left.

Bassi led the offense with three hits on the day, scored twice and drove in a run. Wickman and junior shortstop Jason Volpicelli (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI Catholic) both tallied two hits, with Wickman driving in one run and scoring once, while Volpicelli scored twice. Senior right fielder Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) went 1-for-3 but stole two bases and scored three times.

Senior right-handed pitcher Tom Kellogg (San Antonio, Texas/Saint Mary's Hall) worked the first four innings and allowed just one run on three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Junior Mason Shuffler (Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana) (1-0) earned the win as he allowed just one run on one hit over three innings of action.

Junior lefty Nate Cohen (Atlanta, Ga./North Springs) pitched the final two innings and allowed one run on one hit with a pair of punch outs.

For N.C. Wesleyan, senior catcher Brad Pennington highlighted the offense with a solo home run of Shuffler in the fifth. In total, five different Bishops logged one hit apiece with three different run-scorers.

Senior Galen Beaver suffered the loss after surrendering four runs (three earned) on six hits over 5.2 innings. Sophomore Zach Woolard was tagged for two runs in 0.1 frames, before first-year Alex Crosby pitched one inning and allowed one unearned run. Junior Chris Day closed and gave up three runs (two earned) over the final two innings.

The Generals will return to the diamond on Thursday when they travel to Christopher Newport for a 2:00 pm contest against the Captains.
