LEXINGTON, Va. — The seventh-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team used a seven-goal run, starting with 16:25 left in the opening half through the start of the second, to defeat 12th-ranked Mary Washington on Sunday at Watt Field in the season-opener for both teams.
The victory marked the 20th straight win at home for the Generals (1-0), setting a new program record. The team's current streak dates back to March 17, 2018.
With the game tied, 3-3, senior attacker
Dani Murray (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) notched a goal off a free position shot to put W&L in front, 4-3, at the 16:25 mark. Five minutes later, first-year attacker
Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) scored off an assist from first-year midfielder

With 9:24 on the clock, junior midfielder
Kit McNiff (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) tallied a goal off a free-position shot to extend the lead to 6-3. Murray followed with another goal just over a minute later. McNiff then registered her second goal of the contest off an assist from sophomore attacker
Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) to put the Blue and White up, 8-3, with 6:49 left in the half.
The sixth goal in the run came as time expired in the first. Cote found first-year midfielder
Christina Cavallo (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes' School) in front of the cage for a tally with zeros on the clock to give W&L a 9-3 advantage at the break. The final score during the spurt came right after opening draw of the second, as Faria scored an unassisted goal just 46 seconds into the stanza.
The Eagles (9-1) trimmed the deficit to 10-5 with 24:33 left in the game, but the Generals answered with three straight goals to maintain a comfortable margin en route to the seven-score victory.
Murray led the team with four goals on just five shots. Schwab had three goals and two assists in her first collegiate game. Cavallo and Faria each totaled three goals with Faria also adding an assist. Cote came off the bench to register one goal and two assists.
Senior goalkeeper
Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) stopped 12 shots, while playing the full 60 minutes. She also had two caused turnovers and two ground balls. The 12 saves are the most for Gilbert since she had 14 in a win over Randolph-Macon in the ODAC Championship game on May 6, 2018.

Caitlin Anderson (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) tallied a game-high nine draw controls, while Cote added three draw controls and two ground balls.
The Eagles only had three players register points in the game. Senior attacker Paige Haskins led the way with seven goals on 10 shots, to go with six draw controls. First-year midfielder Kayla Sarazin had two goals and one assist, and junior attacker Morgan Shorts contributed one goal and four assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Reilly Miller gave up 10 goals with four saves in 33:34, while sophomore goalkeeper Summer Allen allowed seven goals with one save in 26:26.
The Blue and White held slight edges in most statistical categories. W&L led, 29-25, in shots and 16-12 in draw controls.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, when they play at 13th-ranked Franklin & Marshall.
