LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team connected on a program-record tying 14 three pointers, easing its way past Eastern Mennonite, 80-60, on Tuesday evening.
The Generals improve to 16-7 overall and 13-3 in ODAC play, while the Royals drop to 4-17 overall and 3-12 in conference.
An early 12-2 run had W&L ahead of EMU, 16-4, at the halfway point of the first quarter, as the teams went on to split the final 24 points of the frame. An EMU triple opened the second quarter, but the Generals scored 11 unanswered points to move ahead, 37-17, before the Royals cut the game back to 15 points heading into halftime.
The W&L attack kept up in the third quarter, outscoring the Royals, 22-16, for the period and led by as many as 24 points. The Royals finished the game on a high note, outscoring the Generals, 14-13, in the final frame, but W&L did not allow EMU to come closer than 18 points at any point over the final 10 minutes.
Sophomore guard
Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) led the W&L offense with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting overall, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Diehl narrowly missed a double-double, as she finished the night with nine boards.
Junior guard
Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) tallied 14 points and six boards, and added two steals, while senior forward
Andy Smithey (Charlotte, N.C./Saint Mary's School) turned in a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double. Smithey shot 5-of-10 overall in the game and her night was highlighted by a made three pointer on her first career attempt in the fourth quarter.
Senior guard
Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) and sophomore guard
Erin Addison (Waxhaw, N.C./Weddington) rounded out the group of five players to score in double digits, with 12 points and 10 points, respectively. Casey has now scored 1,253 points in her career and can move past Megan Babst '12 for eighth on the program's all-time scoring list with 13 more points.
Sophomore guard
Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) dished out six assists in the game, giving her 100 assists on the season for the second straight year. Horn is now the first player in program history to reach the century-assist mark in each of her first two seasons.
For the Royals, first-year guard Tiffany Carey scored 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting, and added two rebounds, four assists and two steals, while junior guard Emily McCombs tallied 11 points, three boards and two dimes.
The Generals' 14 made three pointers came on 36 attempts for a .389 shooting percentage, and tied the program record which was set last season. In all, W&L hit on 44.3 percent (31-70) of its shots in the game and held EMU to 33.8 percent (24-71) overall. The Generals also pulled down 55 rebounds in the game, the fifth game of the season with 50 or more (most since 2007-08).
W&L finished the game with advantages in bench points (22-17), points in the paint (30-26) and fast break points (13-11).
The Generals will be back in action on Sunday, when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan for a 2:00 pm ODAC tip-off.
